Letters of Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. (1876-1958). The correspondents include: Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, Fr. Kieran O’Callaghan OFM Cap.; Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Vicar. Most of the correspondence relates to the establishment of missions in South Africa and later in Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia. The subjects include: Fr. Casimir’s first impressions of Cape Province (23 Oct. 1929); the journey to Barotseland (30 May 1930); requesting permission to retain Parow parish (26 Feb. 1931); discussions with Monsignor Bruno Wolnik SJ (1882-1960) to establish a local mission a few miles from Livingstone (16 June 1931); the necessity of wearing a white habit. Fr. Casimir wrote: ‘It is almost impossible to wear brown during the hot weather. The Conventual Fathers at Ndola wear white. The Jesuits wear any old things. I suggest a light cream-coloured habit’ (27 Nov. 1931); the need to speak the language in Barotseland ‘before we can hope to gain the hearts of the natives’. (30 Nov. 1931); on the study of the Lozi language (26 Jan. 1932); suggesting that a foundation be established in Barotseland ‘to which Catholics can look to with pride – a large church and school, sufficient for a fifty-mile area’. Casimir added: ‘it is a great consolation to know that it can never become a white man’s country’ (23 May 1932); confirming that the new church at Livingstone will cost £3,500 (6 Sept. 1932); referring to the work of Fr. Declan McFadden OFM Cap. and his father (30 Oct. 1932); arrangements for the impending visitation by Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap. Clippings from the mission pages of 'The Father Mathew Record' pasted into an accounts’ journal. The articles publicise the work of the Irish Capuchin missionaries in South Africa and in Northern Rhodesia. Some of the early articles also refer to missionary work undertaken by foreign Capuchin friars in India and in other parts of Asia. The clippings include articles referring to the work of Fr. Declan McFadden OFM Cap., Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap., Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea, Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. and Fr. Fintan Roche OFM Cap. The articles are illustrated with numerous photographs.

A collection of black and white photographic prints mostly relating to Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Prefect Apostolic of Victoria Falls from 1936-50. Most of the prints have been captioned by his nephew, Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. and some were published in Mgr. Killian Flynn as seen from his letters (Ndola, 2003). The file includes prints of Fr. Scrapbook of Fr. Albeus McQuillan OFM Cap. (1912-1989) re the history and personnel of the Irish Capuchin mission in Africa. Fr. Albeus arrived in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1942. The scrapbook includes cuttings from missionary periodicals including 'The Father Mathew Record', hand-drawn maps of mission stations and churches, and personal recollections and memoranda by Fr. Albeus re the Capuchin mission in Africa. The volume contains the following sections:

Senan’s interview with Páraig ‘Paudeen’ Ó Caoimh, deputy military governor of Mountjoy prison in Dublin during the Civil War (1949); A letter to O’Connor affirms that Seán O’Casey ‘abominates everything a Catholic Irishman holds sacred’ (22 Nov. 1952); A letter to Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, refers to the crippling amount of debt accumulated by the Capuchin Publications Office over the past twenty-five years. Fr. Senan wrote ‘for a good few years the yearly income amounts to £22,000 but unfortunately the outgoings in any given year amount to £24,000 or so’. He also confirms that the profits from the ‘Angelic Shepherd’ publication has failed to clear the office’s debt and asks for a new letter of authorization for the bank. He asks for Fr. Colman’s forgiveness and refers to his hope that assistance from ‘two wealthy American friends’ will help clear the debt (22 Apr. 1953); A letter to Fr. Bosco Lennon OFM Cap. refers the death of Maud Gonne MacBride. Fr. Senan wrote ‘She was terrific character. God rest her. I used to love to get her to tell the story of how she went to Spain, was it in 1907, to assassinate King Edward VII’ (28 Apr. 1953).
