Letter re the establishment of a local temperance association

Letter to Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC, guardian, referring to the recent National Temperance Congress. The letter affirms that the ‘most efficient way of reaping the fruits of the Congress is by the formation in this city without further delay … of a branch of the “Father Mathew Total Abstinence Association” similar to those established in in the other centres throughout Ireland …’. The letter is signed by Robert Branigan, Thomas Cantwell JP, Thomas Hayden and William J. Cleere. The letter encloses a list of 107 names (with address) in support of the foundation of the aforementioned branch.

Receipt and Expenditure Ledger

Ledger and account book for the Capuchin community at St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street. The ledger provides a daily record of income received and expenses incurred by the community. Notes are made of income derived from mass stipends, street collections, sodalities, Third Order payments and temperance publications. Reference is also made to monies received from donations, alms, bequests, and cheques. Expenses include travel tickets, staff wages, groceries, building repairs and other sundries. The entries are periodically signed by the Friary Guardian and by the Provincial Minister at Visitations

Nicholas (Maurice) Murphy OSFC, Church Street, Dublin, of a parcel of ground situated on the west side of Bow Street. In consideration of £540 and £110 and for the residue of the terms (two hundred years) specified in the original leases dating to 20 April 1842 and 11 May 1843.
