Letter from Fr. Terence Anglin OFM Cap., Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, to Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. regarding the information contained in Third Order profession books.

Notes compiled by John O’Connell (1843-1905), a grandson of Daniel O’Connell, ‘The Liberator’. The book contains accounts of various Provincial Chapters of the Capuchin Order in Ireland, records of personnel changes in various Capuchin communities, and notes on meetings and other activities of the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. Records include membership and ordination lists. Newspaper cuttings are pasted into the volume. A photographic print of the Capuchin Friary at Rochestown in also extant in the volume. A list is given on page 21 of ‘students who left the convent in Kilkenny … for Church Street, Dublin, about the ninth of April 1900, received the tonsure and minor orders on Saturday, 22nd September 1900’. The list includes the names of Brothers Sylvester Mulligan, Angelus Healy, Stanislaus Kavanagh and Albert Bibby’.

The file includes letters requesting missions in Cappawhite (Tipperary), Ashbourne (Meath), Cappoquin (Waterford), Belfast, Dunmore East (Waterford), Kingstown (Dún Laoghaire, Dublin), Thurles (Tipperary), Sligo, Greystones (Wicklow), Scarriff (Clare), and Ballybay (Monaghan).

Declaration of the result for the canonical election of the discreet for the Capuchin community on Church Street. The declaration lists votes from the community members and declares that Fr. Benedict Phelan OSFC is elected enabling him to attend the Provincial Chapter. It is noted that there are seventeen friars present in the community. The declaration is signed by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC and Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OSFC.

Letter from Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. to Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap., referring to his difficult conditions in California. He wrote ‘The heat and I suppose change of food and water have told on me this month. I haven’t been well at all and have spent some days in bed’. Some mention is made of the political situation in Ireland: ‘Wasn’t D[e Valera]’s address after release wonderful? No word of bitterness from start to finish’. Reference is also made to Fr.
