Letter from Fr. Stephen Murtagh OFM Cap. to Fr. Colman Griffin OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, providing an administrative update on several personnel and financial matters. He notes that Fr. Thomas Dowling’s health is declining significantly; he is in the hospital and ‘can escape being laid low for some months’. Fr. Isidore Kennedy is back in the hospital after an operation and will be there for several weeks. Fr. Stephen notes that the medical bills (around $100 per month for each) are a heavy burden on their ‘small funds’. He also suggests it would be ‘imprudent’ for him to travel to Dublin for the August Chapter meeting, citing the risks of travel during wartime. Regarding the Minister General’s ‘request for a school’, Fr. Stephen is hesitant due to the high cost of building. He is looking for a large, existing house that could be converted cheaply and is inquiring with the Chancery office for options. He reassures the Provincial Minster that he will not take on any ‘great financial obligation’.

Thomas Dowling OFM Cap. expressing his shock about the decision made by General Definitory requesting that the Irish friars hand over Abbottstown house to the Provincial Minister of the Pennsylvania Capuchins. He suggests that the ‘decision will hit our [Irish] Province very hard’. Father Sylvester highlights the deep bonds formed with their ‘American brethren’ and the success of their work. He notes that the friars had been working zealously and were on friendly terms with the local community. Reference is also made to the difficulty of building missions among diverse populations, specifically mentioning Italians, Portuguese, and Mexicans in California.

Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap., Bend, Oregon, to Fr. Thomas Dowling OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, referring to the expansion of the Capuchin mission in Oregon. He notes that when he arrived, there was only one church in Bend. Since then, they have built churches in Hermiston, Umatilla, and Madras. Father Luke lists the number of ‘Catholics’ and ‘souls’ in various towns to justify the expansion: Bend: 42 Catholics / 104 Souls; Prineville: 24 Catholics / 49 Souls; Redmond: 10 Catholics / 49 Souls; Madras: 14 Catholics / 24 Souls. He also affirms that the Catholic Church Extension Society has pledged $500 for several locations, including Redmond, Prineville, and Pilot Rock.
