• Notes by Séamus Ó Casaide (dated 26 June 1930) referring to extracts from the 'Spirit of the Freeholder' (Cork), 1823-3. The extracts refer to the Society of St. Joseph connected with Fr. Mathew and the South Friary and to the possible donation of an altar for Fr. Mathew’s new church (Holy Trinity) in Cork. One of the extracts reads: ‘The new shop opened by Father Mathew at the “Botany” Garden’s, as they are called, is doing a world of all business. So beloved is this Holy Friar, it would seem as if people die purposely to encrease [sic] his custom – not an hour in the day but you’ll see a corpse walking to its long lane. Testimonials for Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC in relation to his claim of 'fama sanctitatis' (a cleric with a reputation for holiness). It appears that the testimonials were compiled in 1937-8. The file includes:
• Statement re a resolution of the Provincial Chapter of August 1927 which decided ‘to take definite steps regarding the introduction of the Cause of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC, the Apostle of Temperance’.
• Testimony of John Francis Maguire, biographer of Father Mathew.
• Tribute of the Lord Mayor of Cork, John Francis Maguire, at the unveiling of the statue of Father Mathew in the chief street in Cork.

• Interview with the late Bishop of Cork, the Most Rev. Thomas Alphonsus O’Callaghan OP. The interview was conducted by Fr. Aloysius Travers OFM Cap., Irish Capuchin Minister Provincial, in 1913-4. It reads ‘On the occasion when the Bishop made the statement, he said that as I was interested in Father Mathew it was right he should mention a criticism which he heard about him. Some seemed to think that he [Fr. Mathew] was not sufficiently interested in his Order: on occasion his attention was drawn to some matter affecting the interests of his Province or community, and he was supposed to have made the remark that it was not his concern but Father [Louis] O’Connell’s’.

The 'Feis Maitiú' was established in 1909 by Fr. Aloysius Travers OFM Cap., who saw the need for a festival to encourage people interested in preserving Irish culture and language. The programme for the annual Feiseanna gradually expanded to include competitions for singing, instrumental music, speech and drama, in both English and Irish. The collection consists of organizational records and promotional materials which document the activities of the Father Mathew Feis from its inception. Correspondence and financial records document the development of the Feis, while other records such as competition results, photographs, posters and fliers primarily document competition productions and performances.

Clippings referring to a procession and retreat (given by Fr. Aloysius Travers OSFC) to the League of Young Irish Crusaders attached to St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin.

Costs of Thomas J. Furlong, 11 Eustace Street, solicitor, to Fr. Peter (Edward) Bowe OSFC and others for preparing a deed of conveyance to vest Church property in nine members of the community as joint tenants and for a power of attorney from Fr. Anthony (John) Travers OSFC (resident in Tasmania) to Fr. Aloysius (William) Travers OSFC. Total cost: £33 5s 4d. 2 copies. With letters from Thomas J. Furlong to Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC and Fr. Paul Neary OSFC referring to a deed executed by Miss Maher on 19 Aug. 1897 conveying the property bequeathed to her following the death of her brother (Fr. Patrick Joseph Columbus Maher OSFC, died 10 Sept. 1894) to the Capuchin community on Church Street.

The fonds consists of the correspondence and papers of Capuchin friars detailing their involvement with participants in the national struggle. The majority of the material dates from 1916-1925 and includes many records highlighting the roles played by Irish Capuchins in ministering to republican leaders and their relations. Of particular interest is a large collection of prison letters including the correspondence of some of the leading figures of the Irish Revolution. The fonds also contains a large collection of republican publicity material, newspapers and miscellaneous items of ephemera and artefacts mostly relating to the military and political campaign organised by nationalists for Irish independence. A smaller collection relating to the repatriation of the bodies of Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. and Fr. Dominic O’Connor OFM Cap. from the United States to Ireland in 1958 is also extant.
