Letter from Fr. Joseph Fenelon OFM Cap. to Fr. Peter Bowe OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, mainly referring to personnel appointments in the United States mission. He writes ‘I am sending Fr. Clement to Ukiah where Fr. Ambrose who has been ill is at present. Fr. Raphael has been hard pressed during the Lent as he was alone there since Fr. Urban went to hospital. I am sure the latter is out of hospital by this, but he will be unfit for work for some time, hence my sending of Clement there.

I brought Fr. Leo [Sheehan] to help us in the Los Angeles missions, he preaches fairly well, yet lacks energy and life. He however is anxious to be called upon again. In future it will be necessary to have a mission staff located in Watts in order to obviate the trouble I had to encounter from bringing men from the other houses where the men are all required’.

Letter from Fr. Joseph Fenelon OFM Cap. to Fr. Peter Bowe OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, reporting on several administrative and community matters within the mission. Father Fenelon describes visiting ‘the whole ground with Luke’ to discuss plans for a new school and community house in Bend, Oregon. He relates that Fr. Albert’s health is deteriorating. He has undergone a second operation at Santa Barbara hospital, where a significant amount of water was removed from him. While he showed brief improvement, he is now reported as ‘somewhat weaker’ and is not expected to live much longer. He also notes that Fr. Dominic O’Connor OFM Cap. wishes to remain in Santa Barbara with Fr. Albert but Father Fenelon suggests that would not serve him well and that he should go back to Santa Inés and see Fr. Albert ‘now and again’. Fathers Raphael, Leo, and Brendan are mentioned as requesting to go home for the summer.

A notebook containing a short chronicle authored by Fr. Urban Riordan OFM Cap., detailing the earliest foundations and missionary assignments of the Irish Capuchins in the United States from 1910 through to the late 1920s. The notes refer to chronological milestones, beginning with the 1910 foundations in Bend and Hermiston, Oregon, under Bishop O’Reilly, leading into the establishment of the Mendocino missions in California (including Ukiah, Mendocino City, Elk, and Fort Bragg) and the canonical acquisition of Old Mission Santa Inés in 1924. Reference is also made to leadership successions and specific pastoral appointments, noting Fr. Luke Sheehan as the first Superior of the American Missions (1910-1922), followed by Fr. Joseph Fenelon in 1922, alongside early operational assignments for friars like Fr. Anthony Holmes, Fr. Leo Sheehan, Fr. Raphael Quinn, Fr. Ambrose Brunton, Fr. Pacificus McCaffery, and Fr. Sebastian Brennan.

Letter from Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap. to Fr. Joseph Fenelon OFM Cap. regarding a serious accident involving Fr. Leo Sheehan OFM Cap. and the subsequent staffing crisis in the Oregon mission. Father Leo suffered a ‘nasty break’ of the shoulder, a ‘scalp wound’, and a ‘slight fracture of the skull’. While there was initial fear of brain injury, that has been ruled out. However, a broken collarbone will keep him hospitalized for at least two months, and he likely won't return to work for six months. He also mentions there is a C.C.C. Camp in Bend, and they are building a second one in Gilchrist. He emphasizes the urgent need for a ‘good reliable Priest’ to attend to these camps and the growing congregation.
