Notes on Robert Wilkinson, Rev. Peter Roe and Fr. Peter Joseph Mulligan OSFC

Notes by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. on Robert Wilkinson, a liberal-Protestant Alderman of Kilkenny who accompanied Fr. Peter Joseph Mulligan OSFC as he passed ‘through Walkin Street on his penny-a-week collection'. Reference is also made to Rev. Peter Roe, Minister of St. Mary’s, who sharply criticised Wilkinson for his ‘espousal of Popery’, and to the history of the Walkin Street Friary in the early to mid-nineteenth century.

A history of ‘The Capuchins in Kilkenny 1643-1937 – a compilation of scattered notes’ by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. Parts I and II. Includes the early history of the Capuchins in the city, notes regarding the Alms house on Walkin Street, and the later construction of the present-day Friary building. With a bound copy (25.5 cm x 20 cm) dated at St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin, 1938.

Lists of sacred vessels, relics, and vestments in the Kilkenny Friary

List of scared vessels and other relics extant in the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The list includes ‘Cross containing relic of the true cross and relics of the saints’, ‘Three large missals’ and ‘a set of gold vestments’. The lists include descriptions, measurements, and details of inscriptions on the various sacred vessels. Reference is also made to the Terence Coghlan Chalice currently held in the Irish Capuchin Archives.

Register book of brothers of the Third Order of St. Francis

The volume contains lists of brothers of the Third Order of St Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Walkin Street, Kilkenny. The title is signed: Fr. Albert Mitchell OSFC, Director, 28 Sept. 1873’. An annotation on the end of title page reads: ‘Many of these names inscribed in this book have been transferred from the members [primer] book which was not properly kept’. A later annotation reads: ‘N.B. The names in this book to page vi inclusive have been transferred further on, as the book was not properly kept and many new members of the order had been omitted. The new list begins at p. viii. Thus:-
Page viii and following contain the names of the brothers living on 1 January 1904.
Page xi. The brothers living who have been isolated.
Page xiv. The deceased brothers, as on 1 Jan. 1904.

Entries are initially listed under ‘Number, name, address, when professed, by whom professed and remarks’. Some of the remarks include comments relating to the date of death of the member, references to emigration and expulsion from the Third Order. Page viii is titled: ‘List of brothers of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Walkin Street, Kilkenny, 1 Jan. 1904’. This portion of the list may have been started by the aforementioned John O’Connell. An annotation on the final page reads: ‘S.G. Dunne, R.T. Burke transferred to new register, 4 May 1939, J. Clifford’.

The volume is titled on the inside of the front cover: ‘Accompt book belonging to the Society of the 3rd Order of St. Francis, Walkin Street, Kilkenny’. Entries are made under the names of the sisters, the dates of their profession, arrears of subscriptions, and the amounts of monthly contributions. Occasional reference is made in some of the entries to the residence of the sisters.

Monthly subscription record book for the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. The entries are listed under number, name and amounts of monthly subscriptions for Jan. 1909-Dec. 1913. The volume also contains receipt and expenditure records from May 1913-Dec. 1918 and from Nov. 1922-Dec. 1947.

The volume also contains miscellaneous accounts including records of collections made by Third Order members at masses and subscriptions towards the cathedral repair fund, 1932-3.
