Photocopies of Temperance Reports held in the State Paper Office (now the National Archives of Ireland). The reports are part of the Official Papers Collection (OP/1840/131/10). Police and magistrates in the southern counties of Ireland submitted detailed reports on the progress of the temperance crusade in their districts at the beginning of 1840 in reply to a circular (12 March 1840) from the Chief Inspector of the Constabulary in Dublin. These replies (the Temperance Reports) have survived in the original handwriting of the police officers and magistrates. The counties covered in the reports include Waterford, Limerick, Kerry, Tipperary, Wexford, Cork, Clare and Galway. The file also includes a copy of the ‘Rules of Saint Mary’s Temperance and Mortality Society established July 28th, 1839, in Limerick’. The photocopies were acquired by Fr. Nessan Shaw OFM Cap. in March 1982. The file also includes notes (compiled by Fr. Nessan) taken from evidence found in the Temperance Reports particularly in respect of the locations visited by Fr. Mathew and the numbers pledged.

Copy undertakings and draft agreements by Thomas Burnell, Carrick Quarry, Edenderry, to Fr. Daniel Patrick O’Reilly OSFC, 49-50 North King Street, Dublin, to deliver stones for the construction of St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street. The undertaking reads: ‘I hereby undertake and agree to supply you for the new Roman Catholic Church now in the course of erection in Church Street, City of Dublin, with the best quality of hammer dressed white limestone …’. A schedule is attached specifying the type and quantity of stones to be provided. With guarantees given to the gentlemen of the building committee.

Copy valuation report for 17 Friary Street, Kilkenny, by Ganly Waters Boyd, 5 William Street, Kilkenny. The report affirms that the vacant property has an open market value of £101,000. With attached copy ordnance survey extract.

Copy report by Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap., Provincial Definitor, on the canonical visitation of the Irish Capuchin missions in the Cape Province, South Africa, and in Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia. The report is divided into the following sections for both respective mission territories:
I. Personnel: ‘which gives a brief account of the Fathers on the mission’.
II. Material Development: ‘which is intended to mark the external development of districts under our charge’.
III. Financial Account: ‘which will indicate the expenses incurred and sources of income’.
IV. Spiritual Development: ‘which will show spiritual growth of districts’.
V. Regular Observance: ‘which will point out the means I have taken to ensure the religious and Franciscan spirit of our missionaries’.
VI. Suggested Ordinances: ‘which will include ordinances which need to be made or emphasised by the Provincial Minister and General Definition’.
A brief history of both the missions in the Cape Province, South Africa, and in Livingstone and Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia, is given in the report.

Copy will of Daniel Murphy, Bellville, Borough of Cork, merchant, extracted from the Principal Register of the Court of Probate, Ireland. The probate was granted on 13 Oct. 1856. He bequeaths to his son, Nicholas Daniel Murphy, the ‘residue and remainder of such property [on Charlotte Quay], lands, premises, monies, securities, goods, chattels and effects whatsoever and wheresoever situate as I may die, seized, possessed of or entitled to in possession’. Provision is also made for his other children. He also appoints his son executor to his will. It is noted in the margin to the copy probate that Daniel Murphy died on 9 Feb. 1856 with an inventory of £14,000. Copy made on 12 Dec. 1874 by William Wiley, Registrar.

Certified copies of the will and probate of James Montgomery Blair, late of Hereford, and latterly of 122 Rue de la Citidelle, Calais. He leaves his all his property to Jeremiah Easter, Belle Vue, Margate, and appoints him as his sole executor. The will was attested, and probate was granted to Jeremiah Easter in the Prerogative Court of Ireland on 14 May 1839. Copies made 24 Mar. 1916.

Copy will and probate of John Yourell. He devises his property to his son Thomas Douglas Yourell and nominates him as his executor. John Yourell died on 4 Sept. 1862 and the grant of probate was made on 27 Sept. 1862. The copy was made by John M. Cantwell, solicitor, 24 Lower Dominick Street, Dublin.

Copy will and probate of Joseph Empson, Kilkenny city. He leaves all his property to his wife Margaret for her use and that of their children. The probate was granted on 29 Sept. 1859.

Copy will and probate of Matthew Murphy, 43 Montpellier Hill, Dublin, veterinary surgeon (d. 15 Nov. 1897). He devises the rents and profits accruing from his various properties (including premises on Bow Street) to his nieces Elizabeth and Mary Anne Murphy. They are to be paid an annuity of £25 per annum. The probate was granted on 4 January 1898. The certified copy of the will and probate were made on 26 August 1904. With a statutory declaration by Matthew Murphy stating that he is the eldest son of Matthew Murphy (d. 15 Nov. 1897) and that his mother (Ellen Murphy) was a daughter of Thomas Fallon (d. 20 Sept. 1871). The declaration is signed 26 August 1904.

Copy will and probate of Richard Empson, Kilkenny city. He leaves all his freehold and personal property situated in Kilkenny to his wife, Ruth Epsom, subject to several legacies charged upon the said properties for his sons and daughters. It is noted in the will that the house and concerns on Walkin Street are ‘now in the possession of Mr Mathew, Mr Max, Mr Hunt and their tenants’. Ruth Epsom and George Leech are appointed executrix and executor of the will. The probate was granted on 6 Nov. 1820.
