Correspondence of John George MacCarthy, solicitor, MP, 70 South Mall, Cork, with Fr. Albert Mitchell OSFC regarding the serving of notices to quit on tenants occupying premises on Tory Top Lane, Cork.

Letters regarding negotiations for the purchase by the Capuchin friars of the Seward estate, comprising premises at the rear of the Assembly Rooms extending out to Charlotte Quay and other properties on Queen Street. Correspondents include J.B. Lacy & Sons, agent for Alicia Louisa Seward, 15 South Mall, Cork, and Fr. Martin Hyland OFM Cap., guardian, Holy Trinity Friary, Cork. A letter dated 30 June 1930 noted that Ms Seward was prepared to accept an offer of £1,150 for the properties. The sale was eventually realised in 1951. See CA HT/2/1/2/34.

Letter to Fr. Canice Bourke OFM Cap. (1890-1969), guardian, Holy Trinity Friary, from Michael Murphy, solicitor, 53 South Mall, Cork, regarding the rent payable on premises on ‘Island Nagay’. Murphy explains that this ‘is a corruption of an old Irish name with which lawyers are familiar in the old deeds they meet, and which I have always found to mean the levelled ground between the two branches of the river, and always close to the south channel, and referring to the area between Parnell Bridge and Parliament Bridge’.

Correspondence of Ronan Daly & Hayes, 12 South Mall, Cork, solicitors, with Fr. Nicholas O’Brien OFM Cap., Provincial Secretary, re an application for an order from the Charitable Commissioners vesting the Ard Mhuire Friary and adjoining lands (consisting of 167 acres 3 roods and 15 perches in the townland of Ards and 38 acres 2 roods in the townland of Rinnsligo, County Donegal) in new trustees (appointed by the FMC trust). Reference (19 Mar. 1976) is made by Fr. Nicholas to the difficulties in locating documents in relation to the purchase of the Ards property from the Irish Land Commission in 1930:
'A search made in the Provincial Archives revealed ecclesiastical documents only (sanction by the Holy See, the local Bishop etc.) I had enquiries made both here in Dublin and in Letterkenny of solicitors whose firms might have been involved in the sale negotiations, but the results were negative. It is possible that the deal was made directly with the representatives of the Land Commission'.

Patrick Flynn OFM Cap., Guardian, Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary, County Donegal, to Brendan McFadden, Greenhill, Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, of a portion of lands for five years at an annual rent of £1,550. With draft instructions for the ‘letting of land and farm buildings at Ards’.
