Reports on the Temperance Mission and Meetings

Clippings from the 'Irish Catholic', the 'Anglo-Celt', the 'Freeman’s Journal', 'Evening Telegraph' mainly relating to the progress of the Capuchin temperance mission. The file includes reports on the work of the Father Mathew Union, notes on temperance meetings, and lectures and sermons by Fr. Aloysius Travers OSFC and other friars in Father Mathew Hall, Dublin, and in Counties Cavan, Cork and Donegal, and in other locations.

Mission and Retreat Account Book

Account book for missions and retreats conducted by the Irish Capuchin friars. Information is given in respect of the date, location, and duration of the mission, and the names of the Capuchin missionaries involved. Occasional reference is made to the type of mission and retreat given such as ‘temperance renewal’ or ‘triduum’. The cash received and the expenses incurred are also noted. Entries refer to the transfer of cash to a ledger.

Lists of retreats and missions given by the Capuchin friars. The lists provide information in respect of the names of the friars giving the mission or retreat, the location (with occasional reference to the parish priest), and the date. Several lists are extant in the file. The file includes:
• List of sermons given at missions in Ballinalsoe, County Galway. Oct. 1914.
• General Capuchin mission list from Jan.-Dec. 1914.
• General Capuchin mission and retreat list (with addendums) from Jan.-Dec. 1915.

Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire, England

A file of four plates showing various views of Fountains Abbey, approximately two miles southwest of Ripon in North Yorkshire.The structure is a ruined Cistercian monastery, founded in 1132. Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian houses in England. With manuscript captions. The plates are labelled a-d.

Queenstown, County Cork

A view of Queenstown (now Cobh), County Cork, from the harbour. Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC died in Queenstown on 8 December 1856. St. Colman’s Cathedral is prominent in the image. The cathedral is still lacking the octagonal limestone spire. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1868 but work on the spire did not commence until 1911 and was eventually completed in 1914.
