A copy print of an engraving of Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan (c.1655-1693), an Irish Jacobite soldier. The source of the original print is not given but it likely dates to the mid-eighteenth century. A note states that the likeness of Sarsfield is derived from the ‘original picture in the possession of Sir Charles Bingham Bart. of Castlebar in the County of Mayo, in the Kingdom of Ireland’.

The permit is signature-stamped by Walter Edgeworth-Johnstone (1863-1936) who served as chief commissioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) from 1915 to 1923. The page also has a used Dublin tramway ticket dated 22 April 1916.

The cartoon was published in the ‘Weekly Dispatch’ (30 April 1916) with the title ‘Raemaekers on the ‘Sinn Féin Riots’. The original caption reads ‘A powerful cartoon, specially drawn for the ‘Weekly Dispatch’, by the famous Dutch artist Raemaekers. Britannia, with loyal Ireland, is seen on guard against the enemy, while the Sinn Feiner, abetted by the Hun, lurks to stab them in the back’.
