Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: letter from the Superior of Ardoyne, Fr. Anthony O'Carroll, to the Provincial, Highgate, explaining why no Passionist was at the conference of the clergy (held in the Diocese?). All were occupied and he had informed the Bishop - Bishop's reply enclosed. (NB. This reply is not attached). Anthony thinks we could not agree to the Bishop's ideas and explains why. Suggests that Provincial brings a canonist with him when he meets the Bishop. Best be prepared with facts as to what our priveileges are. If any men are presented for faculties exams, they had better be good. Anthony thinks we should act now.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Letter from Fr. Thomas, Consultor General, to Provincial, Vincent Grogan. Letter from Propaganda on way to bishop advising that he should settle dispute. He should not refuse faculties to Passionists put up by their superiors unless for canonical reasons. Other religious in Ireland were complaining about similar treatment., so the same advice was given to other bishops. Vincent to keep this information "under his hat". Thomas understands congregation wants this matter settled. (He also mentions that he is glad Vincent has escaped the danger from Kildare - i.e., of being made Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Copy of this reference is also located at 3/3/5/2 serial no. 6475)

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy letter (prpbably a draft) from Fr. Vincent Grogan, Provincial, to Bishop McAllister in reply to his previous correspondence. Vincent quotes extensively from Compendium Facultatum C.P., (1882) re our enjoying the privileges of regulars. He also quotes from de Aedificis and de Elecmonia. He repeats that the Belfast foundation was done in accordance with the canons and with the consent of the bishop. Denies that appeal to Holy See is a threat. Goes on to deal with the refusal of confessonal faculties. No formal appeal has yet been lodged. Passionist still willing to settle.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy letter from the Provincial to Bishop McAllister in reply to his letter of 13 September re Passionists attending conferences of clergy and to building of new church. Provincial mentions that Fr. Anthony's reference, at the conference dinner, to the bazaar would not have been made had Anthony been aware that such reference would have been disagreeable to the Bishop. The Provincial goes on to point out that he can't maintain a proper religious community in Ardoyne if priests are refused faculties. Regrets Bishop refers to a case where now the offender has been punished.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Copy(?) letter rrom Bishop McAllister to the Provincial, Fr. Vincent Grogan, in reply to his of 09.03.1888 (see item under serial number 1968). He was not going to answer that letter. Says he asked for a catalogue of the privileges of the Passionists so that he could compare it with the agreement reached between them and his predecessor. Complains that unsigned letters in the press and a complaint made privately to Rome were hostile acts towards him. Repeats that Vincent bagan the row. Justifies his refusal to allow increase in the number of priest with faculties. Insists on maintaining the original agreement between the Passionists and his predecessor.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Letter to Arthur Devine from the Consultor General, Thomas, Rome, with reference to his letter of 14 inst. and alleged ruling from Propoganda to Dominicans re bishop's powers to grant faculties to religious (see item under serial number 1981). That is not the position. Dominican's have made a submision with that conclusion to Propaganda, but that congregation doesn't want to annoy Irish bishops, so no ruling has ben given. It is said that Bishop McAllister will meet the provincial before answering Propaganda on Passionists' submission. Thomas hopes to see Cardinal (Prefect?) and read him Arthur's letter re crying need for more confessors. Even if there was a clear cut law, it could be evaded.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: 1866025 Arthur Devine

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: Arthur Devine: Letter to Arthur Devine from the Consultor General, Thoms, Rome. Informs Arthur that the bishop has aked Propaganda for a copy of the charges against him. Thomas offered to translate into English for transmission to the bishop the paper he (Thomas) had presented to Propaganda. Permission was given and also that he might make any modification he thought fit. Encloses a copy (which was not to hand at date of computerisation). Comments in the document are deliberatly mild in the hope that the bishop will give in good-naturedly.

He mentions that the provincial will have alrady shown to Arthur the General's reasons for not agreeing to Arthur's proposed translation to Australia, namely that robust health is required for that country.

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister: 1874002 Hilary Mara

Holy Cross Retreat, Ardoyne, Belfast; Dispute with Bishop McAllister:Hilary Mara: Letter to the Provincial from the Consultor General, Thoms, Rome. Has written and wired to Hilary that permission has been obtained for him to celebrate mass on board ship (on voyage to Australia?).
Bishop McAllister has got the Propaganda letter, but is on visitation at the moment and has not scrutinised it completely. He claims some of the Passionists allegations are untrue. Propaganda has told Thomas that there is no law compelling a bishop to give faculties to all religious in a community, but he cannot refuse faculties to all either. He can use his discretion as to how many faculties he gives.. The Dominicans have come up against this problem also (and that seems to have been the decison given?). Can't expect new law just for C.Ps.
