Christmas Card Bound Volume

A bound volume containing mainly pasted-in Christmas and New Years’ greeting cards, notes, and letters to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. The volume includes cards from Robert Monteith, Seumas O’Brien (1880-1959), Major General Hugo MacNeill, Clare Sheridan, Eduard Hempel, Archbishop Joseph Walsh, Fr. Terence L. Connolly SJ, Fr. Michael O'Shea OFM Cap., Margaret Mary Pearse, Tadhg Mac Firbishigh, Bishop John Dignan, Fr. Donal Herlihy, and Archbishop Ettore Felici. Includes sketches by Seán O’Connor (1909-1992). With a portrait sketch (in ink) of Fr. Senan by ‘Jocandus’ Joseph O’Connor (1877-1957).

Literature in Ireland / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on spine which reads ‘Literature in Ireland’. The volume contains original letters from several prominent authors, artists and public figures. Includes correspondence from Francis MacManus, Seán Ó Faoláin, Mary MacSwiney, Maurice Walsh, Daniel Corkery, Patrick Kavanagh, William Magennis, Seosamh Mac Grianna, Michael McLaverty, William Frederick Paul Stockley, Helena Concannon, John Desmond Sheridan, and Kathleen O’Brennan. The volume also contains newspaper and magazine clippings, printed ephemera, review material, and photographs relating to prominent Irish artists and writers. There are many clippings in the volume which assess and critique the writings of James Joyce. The material is extant in an ‘Walker’s Century Scrap & Newscutting’ volume.

Bound Postcard Print Volume

A bound volume containing colour postcard images of scenic locations around Ireland, mostly in County Kerry. Includes various scenes around Killarney. The volume also includes postcards of Croagh Patrick in Mayo and an image of the control tower at Shannon Airport in County Clare. All the postcards have manuscript notes on the reverse by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. The notes appear to be draft letters written by Fr. Senan to his secretary Mollie Baxter in circa 1953. There are duplicate postcards, and some are loose within the volume.

Jack B. Yeats National Loan Exhibition Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Jack B. Yeats / National Loan Exhibition / 1945’. The volume contains photographic prints showing some of the 179 Yeats’s paintings on display at the exhibition. The exhibition was held at the National College of Art in Dublin in June and July 1945. It appears that Fr. Senan played a significant role in organising the exhibition. Printed extracts from a catalogue are extant in the volume which include information on painting titles, dimensions, and provenance. The volume also includes some related clippings re Yeats’s artistic output, a Christmas card from the Cuala Press, letters from Yeats to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and a ink-sketch signed by the artist. The letters date from 1941 to 1946. Several of Yeats’s paintings displayed in the exhibition including ‘The Funeral of Harry Boland’ (1922) and ‘Communicating with Prisoners’ (1924) were in the possession of Fr. Senan at the time of the National Loan Exhibition.

The Catholic Press / Bound Clipping Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript title to the spine which reads ‘The Catholic Press’. The volume contains varied clippings relating to the international Catholic Press and periodical literature particularly in the United States, Canada, and Australia. There are a few clippings which reference the writer Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953).

Provincial Chapter and Friar Groups

‘Kodak film wallet / MacSweeny’s Photographic Supply Store, Cork’. The file contains eight plates showing groups of Capuchins, including some images of friars at a Provincial Chapter in the Church Street Friary, Dublin. Includes images of Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. (1874-1938). Fr. Edwin was Provincial Minister from 1926-9 and from 1931-7.

Fr. Joseph Harkins OSFC (1853-1888)

Two plates showing portraits of Fr. Joseph Harkins OSFC (1853-1888). This Kilkenny-born friar traveled to India in about 1884 and took charge of a mission in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. He died in Meerut on 1 December 1888. The larger plate (10.5 cm x 8 cm) appears to a photographic print of a portrait painting. With an annotated cover.

The Road from Rochestown, County Cork

The image shows three Capuchin friars with a three-arch stone bridge, a mill and a chimney in the distant background. One of the friars is identifiable. The individual first on the right is Fr. Ignatius Collins OSFC. With an annotated cover.

Acts of Professions of the Irish Capuchin Martyrs

A file containing three plates with images of the original acts of professions of two seventeenth century Irish Capuchin martyrs, Fr. Fiacre Tobin OSFC (c.1620-1656) and Fr. John Baptist Dowdall OSFC (c.1626-1710). The plates are labelled a-c. Fiacre Tobin’s profession is dated 2 July 1638. John Baptist Dowdall’s profession (at the Irish Capuchin friary in Charleville, France) is dated 5 October 1652.

Mission and Retreat Lists

Notebook compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OSFC detailing the missions and retreats given by him and other Capuchin friars from c.1903-08. The opening page notes that he was ordained on 23 Feb. 1902. An index is extant at the start of the volume. Information is given in respect of the location of the retreat or mission, the date, and the number of confessions heard and sermons preached. Occasional reference is made the subject of sermons and lectures such as ‘charity’, ‘the mercy of God’, and the 'dangers of drink’. The file also includes a separate typescript listing of missions, retreats and special sermons given by Fr. Angelus from 1903-40.
