First Anniversary Memorial Cards for 1916 Rising Leaders

First anniversary cards for the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising including one card for Joseph Mary Plunkett, William Pearse, Michael O’Hanrahan, Edward Daly, another for Major John MacBride, and one for ‘for the repose of the souls of the following Irishmen who were executed by English Law’. (Hand coloured, tricolour and green flag over crossed pikes. Interlacing ribbon reads: ‘Our Prayers Daily’.

Newspaper Cuttings Volume

Newspaper cuttings compiled by Fr. Paul Neary OFM Cap. (d. 20 June 1939) relating to the life and temperance campaign of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. The majority of the cuttings and publications are from 1890 and relate to the commemorations of the centenary of the birth of Fr. Mathew. An alphabetical index to the newspaper clippings is extant at the front of the volume. The volume includes cuttings from the 'Belfast Morning News', 'Catholic Times', 'Daily Graphic', 'Evening Telegraph', 'Cork Examiner', 'Freeman’s Journal', 'Northern Whig' (Belfast), 'Temperance Record' (London), 'Weekly Herald', and 'Women’s Penny Papers'. The volume also includes illustrations of Father Mathew Memorial Hall, Church Street, Dublin, temperance demonstrations in Cork and Dublin, notable events and places associated with the life and work of Fr. Mathew, and the Father Mathew statue on Sackville Street, Dublin. Printed matter inserted in the volume includes flyers for the Grand National Celebration in honour of Father Mathew held in Cork, 8-10 Oct. 1890 (p. 101), the Rule book of the female branch of the Father Mathew Sacred Thirst Sodality (p. 149), and pastoral letters published by various Irish bishops marking the Father Mathew centenary (pp 163-70).

Corpus Christi Procession, Rochestown, County Cork

Two images showing a large procession to the Capuchin Friary, Rochestown, County Cork. The annotated cover reads ‘Procession. Rochestown. 1905’. The photograph shows the Corpus Christi procession to the Capuchin Friary in Rochestown. This annual celebration held at the friary attracted huge crowds from both the city and county in the first two decades of the twentieth century. People travelled by train, by trap or walked to the friary from Cork city. It was the most popular event of the year at Rochestown until 1926 when the first Cork city procession was held.

Souvenir of Temperance Demonstration in Longford

Illustrated souvenir of the Great Temperance Demonstration held in Longford Town on 3 July 1910. Includes photographs and reports on speeches at the demonstration including an address by Most Rev. Joseph Hoare, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Fr. Aloysius Travers OSFC and many other public figures.

D.F. Giltinan and the Father Mathew Centenary Committee

D.F. Giltinan was honorary secretary of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee and was also secretary to the Lord Mayor of Cork. The file includes:
• Letter from John O’Sullivan, St. Patrick’s Catholic Total Abstinence League, to D.F. Giltinan re his valuable services in the cause of total abstinence in Cork. 30 Nov. 1887.
• Invitation cards to D.F. Giltinan to the National Celebration of the Centenary of Father Mathew in Cork on 9-15 October 1890. Includes invitations to the centennial oration given by Sir John Pope Hennessy (1834-1891) and religious ceremonies in Holy Trinity Church in Cork. Printed and manuscript, 5 pp.
• Letter from Fr. Paul Neary OSFC to D.F. Giltinan re a gift of a small case of relics as a mark of gratitude for his services in connection with the Fr. Mathew centenary celebrations. 6 Oct. 1891.
• Notes for a speech given by D.F. Giltinan at a meeting of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee.
• Notice to D.F. Giltinan from Fr. Paul Neary OSFC re the final meeting of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee on 18 Oct. 1891.
• Letters from D.F. Giltinan to Henry McConnell, 42 Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, re an unpaid bill of quantities in connection with the completion of the Father Mathew Memorial (Holy Trinity) Church, Cork. 25 Mar. 1893-18 Aug. 1893.
• The file also includes a cover letter from Nora Giltinan referring to an enclosed poem written by her deceased brother ‘which may be of use for the columns of the “Father Mathew Record”’. 17 July 1931.
