Surrender by Thomas Douglas Yourell, salesmaster, Smithfield, and Rosetta Yourella, widow, Bessborough Terrace, Dublin, to Fr. Lawrence Gallerani OSFC, Fr. James Edward Tommins OSFC and Fr. Daniel Patrick O’Reilly OSFC, North King Street, (‘the grantees’) of premises known as 47 North King Street, in consideration of the sum of £200 and discharged from annuities of £50 and £10. Tables of contents for 'The Capuchin Annuals' published between 1966 and 1977. The tables were compiled by Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. and includes article titles, authors and page numbers. Inserts in the volume include a typescript note referring to Fr. Aloysius Travers OFM Cap. ministry to James Connolly in Kilmainham Jail in 1916 ('The Capuchin Annual', 1966), newspaper clippings, and a draft article by Gavin O’Shannon on the 1916 Commemorative Medallion created by Paul Vincze (1907-1994) in 1966.

Henry Anglin OFM Cap. (5 July 1966), enclosing numbered photographic prints of Damstadt, Taizé and Erlach, and other illustrations to be used in the published article.

Furlong, solicitor, 11 Eustace Street, Dublin.

Teaching Notes for the History of the Bantu Religion

A collection of reading materials and teaching notes compiled by Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. for a course on the history of the Bantu religion which he taught in the University of Zambia. The file includes: letters from Dr. Vukani G. Nyirenda, University Secretary, to Fr. Edwin re his appointment as a senior lecturer in education (28 Oct. 1985); and from Dr. I.W. Chikalanga, senior lecturer, re Fr. Edwin’s employment in the School of Education (under the sponsorship of Zambian Episcopal Council) from October 1985 to October 1997.

He adds ‘With the exception of the clergy who may hold the office of president, vice-president and honorary-treasurer of a Branch of the League of the Cross without being total abstainers, we require … that all other officers of the League shall be total abstainers’. 7 Dec. 1885. Temperance Associations’ File

• Flier for the Dublin Total Abstinence Society advertising its work and various events. It reads ‘The Dublin Total Abstinence Society was the oldest Society in the City, and the late James Haughton Esq., was the President. … It is a pleasing fact, and worthy of record, that still the friendship exists between the Haughton family and the Society; and the donation of £150, which the Society has received from the four legatees of the late Miss Lizzie Haughton, proves the interest the family still take in the principles which their father advocated for many years in the city’. Reference is made to the three ‘coffee palaces’ and to two large temperance halls (one in Dublin and one in Kingstown). The flier dates to 1885. The reverse of the flier reprints a ‘Great Temperance Procession Poster’ of March 1841. Printed. 2 pp.
• Notebook containing newspaper clippings relating to the League of the Sacred Thirst attached to St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin’. An annotation on the first page reads ‘I began this League of the “Sacred Thirst” in June [1880] in our Church of the Lady of the Angels, Church Street, the men meet on Mondays and the women on Wednesday evenings. Fr. Albert Mitchell OSFC’. The clippings date from 10 Sept. 1880 to 23 Sept. 1881 and report meetings of this Temperance Sodality in Church Street and in the temperance hall on Halston Street. Some annotations and comments by Fr. Mitchell are added to the notebook. Clippings, 20 pp.
