The volume contains many letters from Heinrich Bewerunge, a German-born musicologist, and a Professor at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, County Kildare. The letters from Bewerunge (1903-11) refer primarily to scholarship on church music. Many of the remaining letters relate to Henebry’s interactions with individuals connected with Conradh na Gaeilge and other organisations promoting the Gaelic Revival. Richard Henebry to his brother John Henebry, and letters to the latter conveying sympathies on the former’s death. A letter (in Irish) from Séamus Breathnach (Lismore, County Waterford) to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. referring to the friar’s research on Henebry’s work is also extant in the volume (12 Sept. 1924).

Letters, memoranda, and printed matter re Fr. Richard Henebry’s appointment to the chair of Irish at the Catholic University in Washington DC. The file includes letters from Fr. Thomas Joseph Shahan, University Rector, re Henebry’s appointment. Shahan wrote ‘The students of your courses are likely, both for Gaelic and Sanskrit, to be persons of considerable culture, graduates of colleges, or people of leisure from the city, which has a population of about ¼ million, mostly government officials and their families’ (21 May 1895). A letter from Fr. Thomas James Conaty, Rector, refers to Henebry’s ill-health (27 Aug. 1900) while a later letter (5 July 1901) informs him that his contract would not be renewed. The file also includes a typescript copy of a statement from Henebry to the board of trustees of the Catholic University stating his educational attainments and stating his case for reappointment to the Chair of Irish. With three copies of a printed leaflet titled ‘Facts for Brother Hibernians / Save the Gaelic Chair and the Honor of Ireland’ (1902).

A bound volume containing letters to Fr. Richard Henebry. The spine is titled with the names of the correspondents in the volume. These are Sir Bertram Windle, Fr. Michael Sheehan, and Kuno Meyer (41 Huskission Street, Liverpool). Most of the letters in the volume are from Fr. Michael Sheehan and relate to Gaelic scholarship and Ring College (Coláiste na Rinne) in County Waterford. One of the letters from Kuno Meyer refers to Henebry’s tribute to the late Heinrich Zimmer (1851-1910), the German-born Irish language scholar (20 Feb. 1911). The volume also contains a copy of Henebry’s lengthy reply to Meyer. Henebry wrote ‘Now I will stand for no man to say which is untrue in order to vilify my religion and the religion of my people. Why import theological discussions into Keltics? The Grammatica Celtica was written by a Catholic. Read it through and you will fail to find a single reference to ‘Der relige Dr Martin Luther in it’ (28 Feb. 1911). The letters from Windle refer to matters relating to Henebry’s Professorship of Irish in University College Cork and to the latter’s declining health.

A copybook containing transcriptions of Gaelic texts compiled by Fr. Richard Henebry. The text appears to be a transcription from the British Library Additional Manuscript (15,403) titled ‘Treatise on the virtues of herbs and medals in alphabetical order’. The original text is a vellum MS and was dated by Standish O’Grady to the sixteenth century.
