Mission and Retreat Correspondence

The sub-series contains a large collection of letters written to the Capuchin friars requesting parish missions, tridua, retreats, public sermons and lectures. The letters are mostly from local clerics and parish priests, religious congregations (both male and female), and lay religious sodalities and temperance associations. Some of the letters provide detail on religious practices and observance. Other letters give information on local temperance activities.

Administrative Records

The sub-series consists of records created during the routine management of Father Mathew Temperance Hall, Church Street, Dublin. This section includes the minutes of the weekly meetings of the Hall Committee.

Community Correspondence

The subseries contains letters to Capuchin friars in Kilkenny concerning missions, retreats, the appointment of confessors and notices of jubilees, anniversaries and deaths. Many of the letters are from the Provincial Minster to the guardians of the Friary and relate to the internal administration of the Order. The section includes a large register book (CA KK/1/3/1) which contains copies of numerous circular letters and memoranda from Ministers General and Provincial Ministers.

St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cork

The subseries includes research on St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cork. In February 1830 Fr. Mathew secured a lease of the Botanic Gardens which became the city’s first Catholic cemetery. A portion of the ground was also set aside for the free burial of the poor, whose bodies had previously been left outside their dwellings until sufficient money was collected for their internment.

Research for the Cause of Father Mathew

The subseries contains material assembled with a view to undertaking a beatification process for Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. The files include evidence and investigations into cures attributed to the intercession of prayers at Fr. Mathew’s grave in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cork.

Buildings, Repair and Maintenance

This sub-series includes records relating to the construction and repair history of buildings owned by the Capuchin community in Kilkenny City. The sub-series includes specifications for buildings, correspondence, bills of cost for construction, property upkeep and improvement, and contracts for repair and servicing of machinery

Title Deeds and Leases

This section contains mainly legal documents including various types of deeds of title including leases, mortgages, wills, property abstracts, searches, and financial documents. The section also includes correspondence from solicitors engaged in legal work connected with the conveyance of property. The material is divided into two sub-series relating to the location of the plots of ground to which the document refers: Walkin Street (later Friary Street) and Pennyfeather Lane.

Father Mathew Bicentenary (1990)

The sub-series contains files relating to the organisation of events in 1990 to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC.
