Carmelite Order, Brothers Jerome & Gabriel: Angelo Mai (Angelus Maui’s): Reverend Thomas N. Burke: Charles Benaert: Thomas B. Fahy: Archbishop William J. Walsh
This sub-fond is divided into seven files and one item and primarily contains the early history of the Tertiary Carmelite Order. The first item is a ledger which contains the laws and rules that the Order is to follow and details several of the earliest professions of Carmelite Brothers. The files contain a copy of a transfer of obedience of the Order to the Archbishop of Dublin, more vows of profession, correspondence regarding a trip to Rome by two brothers about the constitution of the Order, a sermon by Thomas N. Burke, rule books of various religious Orders and letters of the Archbishop William J. Walsh
Letters from J E MacDermott (Terence de Vere White LLB) and other solicitors to Father Rogers (not Vincentian), bursar of All Hallows College, Drumcondra, to Father Henry O’Connor CM, St Joseph’s, Blackrock, and Father James O’Doherty CM, Saint Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, regarding houses owned by the Vincentians which have been the subject of demolition orders.
A large collection of newspapers, broadsheets and daily bulletins relating to the independence struggle. The republican newspapers, publicity material and political ephemera collected by the Irish Capuchins are particularly important as they cover a broad spectrum of nationalist political debate. A good number of the Irish Capuchins were privately sympathetic to the republican side and maintained close contacts with many prominent Anti-Treaty figures. Many of the republican newspapers and bulletins accumulated by the friars covered the day-to-day conduct of the Civil War and contain information not found elsewhere in the contemporary press since the daily newspaper titles published little or nothing originating from the Anti-Treaty side.
The series contains souvenir booklets and miscellaneous ephemera and artefacts relating to the 1916 Rising. Most of the booklets contain photographic postcards depicting various figures, events and artefacts associated with the Easter Rising and its aftermath.
