MOUNT ARGUS BUILDINGS/AS A WHOLE; J.J. McCARTHY (ARCHITECT);
letter from J.J.McCarthy, 163, Great Brunswick Street, Dublijn to the Rector of Mount Argus, Fr. Dominic O.Neill, C.P.
Plans for cuhurch are ready. Since there is no contractor, a clerk of works is necessary. Is of the opinion that his time and trouble in making plans (before Dominic became Rector) should be paid for.

On blank page of this letter is copy or draft of Dominic's reply asking for a statement of charges..

Received with astonishment the bill for £212 for work done for Frs. Osmund and Alphonsus. Complains that this matter has now been raised for the first tiime after the expiry of several years. Mentions that the Fathers at that time and at considerable expense to themselves, set aside another architect to make way for him (McCarthy). He was also well paid for previous work. Plans were only tentative at that time and could be regarded as only sketches. To claim for them is now is improper. .

There is no impropriety in his claim. Rejects that he put aside one architect for another. Tentative plans must have ressonabe limits. Fr. Alphonsus understood this and said that McCarthy would be paid, as did Fr. Osmund before he left office. He can't see how two sets of drawings (and now another) are sketches. All this took time and took him away from other work.

letter from J.J.McCarthy, Charleston House, Rathmines, Dublin to the Rector of Mount Argus, Fr. Dominic O.Neill, C.P.

Explains that what he wanted to do was to show just how much work had been done, not to put a price on it, but Dominic had asked for the billl! It is all now past. Would Bro. John call for the plans now in the office? When he is better he will call on Dominic. If Dominc is better first, perhaps he will call on him.
