Many of these were old orders which have been extinct for centuries and have not been recognised or approved by the Holy See. The Secretariat of State wishes to advise the Hierarchy about these, especially one entitled ‘Sovrano Militare Ospedaliero Ordine de Cavalieri di S. Rita.

Letter from +McQuaid to Mgr. Montini regarding the current political situation in Ireland and the attitude of the new government of the Irish Republic to the Holy See. He says the delay in their reply has more to do with the absence of the Minister for External Affairs who has been on government business abroad. He also states that the ‘immaturity’ of the Minister has added to the delays as he ‘…loads himself with interviews, visits and speeches, which cannot be regarded as of major importance to his proper function’.

He is asked to draw the attention of the faithful to the difficult situations faced by refugees, to their spiritual and material needs and the necessary cooperation that will ensure a good outcome. He asks that any information given in the Diocese on this subject should be sent to the Secretariat of State.
