A bound book, formerly ‘The Works of Ruskin / library edition / Vol. II’, in which clippings relating to the 1916 Rising taken from contemporary newspapers have been laid in. The clippings (including many printed photographs and illustrations) cover the fighting and the subsequent executions of the rebel leaders. The volume includes contemporary accounts mainly taken from loyalist publications, including the ‘Irish Times’, ‘Daily Sketch’ and ‘Weekly Dispatch’. The volume also includes articles from the ‘Cork Free Press’. The end pages of the volume contain clippings relating to the Civil War and material re the deaths and executions of leading republicans during the latter stages of that conflict. A few articles from the late 1930s and early 1940s (presumably compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap.) are also extant in the volume. Inserts include typescript ephemera mainly from anti-Treaty and republican sources during the Civil War. The volume is not paginated.
The subseries comprises a large collection of bound volumes containing photographic material, newspaper and magazine clippings, original historical records and ephemera compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., the editor of ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The content of the volumes is extremely varied and, in many instances, includes rare original records reflecting Moynihan’s interest in Irish history, and particularly the revolutionary period. Some of the material complements content published in ‘The Capuchin Annual’ with several of the original photographs reproduced in various editions of the periodical. Other content (especially the clippings) is suggestive of Moynihan’s eclectic interest in Irish church history, Franciscan history, antiquities, literature, Gaelic culture, historiography, and the contemporary political and economic situation in Ireland especially during the Second World War.
A clipping of a memoriam sheet for the republican soldier Liam Lynch who was shot and killed by Free State forces on 10 April 1923. The memoriam includes an extract from Vergil’s ‘Aeneid’.
A clipping of a photograph of Archbishop Daniel Mannix. The clipping is taken from an article giving the text of Mannix’s speech at the Rotunda in Dublin on 29 October 1925. The entire article is extant in the volume. The article was published in ‘An Phoblacht’ (30 October 1925).

Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. is present in one of the images, described as a ‘distinguished Franciscan Capuchin scholar’. Fr. Senan has annotated the word ‘scholar’ with ‘oh yeah!’. The clipping is taken from the ‘Daily Express’ (12 July 1934).

The signatories include his brother Donal Hales, Irish Consul in Genoa, Italy. The letter was addressed to the editor of the ‘Cork Examiner’ but the clipping is taken from ‘Eire’ (20 January 1923).

A flier with the text of a manifesto signed off on by IRA prisoners Michael Kilroy and Michael MacGiollaruaidh, then on hunger strike in Mountjoy Jail. The text refers to the death of Terence MacSwiney in 1920.
