Flier for ‘The Playboy of the Western World’, Gaiety Theatre, Dublin

A flier promoting a production of John Millington Synge’s ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin in July 1953. The production was staged by Cyril Cusack (1910-1993) with the actor himself in the title role (as Christy Mahon). The cast also included the Belfast-born actress Siobhán McKenna (as Pegeen Mike), with appearances by Jack McGowran, Walter Macken, and Cyril Cusack’s wife Maureen.

Cathal O’Shannon and Fr. Augustine Hayden

A clipping of a photograph of Cathal O’Shannon and Fr. Augustine Hayden OSFC at the Mater Hospital in Dublin where the former was receiving treatment. The clipping was used to illustrate an article on O’Shannon’s personal recollections of the 1916 Rising published in the ‘Empire News’ (4 September 1953).

Louis Raemaekers cartoon on the ‘Sinn Féin Riots’

A clipping of a cartoon by the Dutch caricaturist Louis Raemaekers on the 1916 Rising. The cartoon was published in the ‘Weekly Dispatch’ (30 April 1916) with the title ‘Raemaekers on the ‘Sinn Féin Riots’. The original caption reads ‘A powerful cartoon, specially drawn for the ‘Weekly Dispatch’, by the famous Dutch artist Raemaekers. Britannia, with loyal Ireland, is seen on guard against the enemy, while the Sinn Feiner, abetted by the Hun, lurks to stab them in the back’.
