Jeremiah O’Toole, Parish Priest, Kilmeena, Westport, remarked: ‘I have eighteen islands inhabited islands close to the mainland, and I would be pleased if you offered [the temperance] Crusade on a Sunday’. Perhaps these objections may be overcome but if you want to succeed you must rely mainly on your own “individual efforts” …’. Two numbered notes are also extant in the file: ‘7210 / John (Ryan?) London, 27 Jan. 71 / have seen O’D / settled to meet the people at my place on Tuesday night 31st’ and ‘7196 / list of towns in England, Scotland, and Ireland’.
