Lady Stewart-Bam at Ards House

Clipping of an article titled ‘Lady Stewart-Bam at Ards House’ published in 'The Gentlewoman' magazine. The article refers to the marriage of Captain Sir Pieter Canzius Van Bloommestein Bam and Ena Dingwall Tasca Stewart of Ards House, County Donegal, on 26 July 1910. The article also provides an account of the Stewart-Bam residence in Ards, County Donegal. With a photographic print of Lady Stewart-Bam and Ards House. The article reads:
'Lady Stewart-Bam, although the heiress to an Irish estate, was not born in Ireland: but here heart is often with her people there, and she loves nothing so much as to find herself surrounded by those who hail from the “distressful Isle”. She told the writer that when she settles down in her own home in London, she intends to have none but her “own people” about her as servants'.
The file includes a photostat copy of the article.

A file (with original box lacking a cover) containing eight slides. The file includes images of individuals, groups and landscapes.
36 (a) A glass stereo plate image of four women at the seaside cliffs known as Bridges of Ross, on the north side of the Loop Head peninsula in County Clare.
36 (b) A view of two Capuchin friars taking a break from an excursion on a jaunting car near Rochestown in County Cork in c.1908. The two friars are probably Fr. Jarlath Hynes OFM Cap. (1867-1918) and Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. (1876-1958). The same image is extant at CA PH-1-23-S.
36 (c) A glass stereo plate of what appears to be unidentified deceased Capuchin friar in a coffin. This is probably an image of a deceased Fr. Sebastian O’Brien OFM Cap. (1867-1931).
36 (d) An interior view of Rochestown Friary Church in County Cork.
36 (f) A large group of both men and women (both sitting and standing) outside the main door to St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin. Some of the men in the back row appear to be wearing temperance badges. They are probably part of a lay temperance association attached to the Church.

Lantern Slides and Plates relating to Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC and his Temperance Campaign

The series includes lantern slides and glass plate photographic images relating to the life and career of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC (1790-1856), a famed nineteenth century temperance campaigner and Capuchin friar. It is very probable that these lantern slides were used as illustrative aids by the Capuchins for public talks and auditorium lectures on Fr. Mathew’s campaign against intoxicating liquor. Temperance activity was revived in 1905 when the Irish Catholic hierarchy invited the Capuchins to preach a National Crusade. This revival generated widespread public enthusiasm and by 1912 the Capuchins had administered over a million pledges throughout the country. The lanterns slides were, in all probability, used in this campaign. The collection includes images of various places associated with Fr. Mathew’s life and notable events associated with his crusade against intoxicating liquor which began in Cork in 1838. Other images relate to later commemorations of Fr. Mathew and include photographs of the ‘Father Mathew Pavilion’ at the Cork International Exhibition of 1902 which displayed historical artefacts, devotional objects and personal paraphernalia associated with his campaign.
