Notebooks on Kilkenny Friary history

Notebooks and copybooks compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. on the history of the Capuchins in Kilkenny. The books contain fragmentary notes on significant events and friars associated with the Capuchins in Kilkenny including chronologies, transcripts from old texts, foundation documents and local newspapers and biographical details on friars. The copybooks also include notes relating to:
• The building of the new Capuchin Friary on Walkin Street (1848) by Fr. Peter Joseph Mulligan OSFC.
• Transcripts of epitaphs on the tombs of Capuchin friars in Kilkenny
• Biographical notes on Fr. Fidelis (Peter) O’Rourke OSFC and Fr. J.P. O’Reilly OSFC (including notes re his missionary work in New Zealand)
• Notes on the construction of ‘the new organ built by Messrs White & Sons, Dublin, erected in the Church of St. Francis by Rev. P.J. Mulligan OSFC on Sunday, October 28th 1849’.

Some of the papers listed in these catalogues are now held in the Provincial Archives in Dublin. Other records referenced in the catalogues have evidently been lost. Brun, 'Le Livre illustré en France au XVIe siècle', p. 310).

Specification and contract for installation of church organ

Specification and contract of agreement with Alex Chestnutt & Company, organ builders, Manor Street, Waterford, for the installation of a ‘two-manual organ’ at the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The agreement (dated 28 July 1914) with Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC, guardian, notes that the consideration money for the installation of the organ was £580. The file includes letters from Alex Chestnutt to Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC in which the former notes that ‘owing to this unfortunate war there is very little doing in the organ building trade … and having many bills to meet now at the end of the year I have no other course to take but to ask if you will kindly oblige me with another £100’. (30 Dec. 1914). With letters to Fr. Pius Duggan OSFC, guardian, regarding an estimate from the cleaning and overhaul of the organ (8 Feb. 1930).

Virgilius Murtagh OSFC regarding the specification for work on the extension to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The enclosed plans and alternative ‘schemes’ for the extension to the sacristy are at CA KK/2/3/20.
