Letter to James Pearse from George St. Clair, 127 Bristol Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, expressing his thanks for sending the ‘small volume by “Humanitas”’.

Letters to James Pearse from W.J. Ramsey, Manager, the Progressive Publishing Company, 28 Stonecutter Street, London. The letter of 25 November 1884 encloses a clipping of an advertisement for ‘Socialism a curse / a reply to a Lecture delivered by Edward B. Aveling’ and ‘Is God the First Cause?’ (1883) by ‘Humanitas’ (James Pearse).

D.F. Giltinan was honorary secretary of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee and was also secretary to the Lord Mayor of Cork. The file includes:
• Letter from John O’Sullivan, St. Patrick’s Catholic Total Abstinence League, to D.F. Giltinan re his valuable services in the cause of total abstinence in Cork. 30 Nov. 1887.
• Invitation cards to D.F. Giltinan to the National Celebration of the Centenary of Father Mathew in Cork on 9-15 October 1890. Includes invitations to the centennial oration given by Sir John Pope Hennessy (1834-1891) and religious ceremonies in Holy Trinity Church in Cork. Printed and manuscript, 5 pp.
• Letter from Fr. Paul Neary OSFC to D.F. Giltinan re a gift of a small case of relics as a mark of gratitude for his services in connection with the Fr. Mathew centenary celebrations. 6 Oct. 1891.
• Notes for a speech given by D.F. Giltinan at a meeting of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee.
• Notice to D.F. Giltinan from Fr. Paul Neary OSFC re the final meeting of the Father Mathew Centenary Committee on 18 Oct. 1891.
• Letters from D.F. Giltinan to Henry McConnell, 42 Great Brunswick Street, Dublin, re an unpaid bill of quantities in connection with the completion of the Father Mathew Memorial (Holy Trinity) Church, Cork. 25 Mar. 1893-18 Aug. 1893.
• The file also includes a cover letter from Nora Giltinan referring to an enclosed poem written by her deceased brother ‘which may be of use for the columns of the “Father Mathew Record”’. 17 July 1931.

Photographic prints annotated on the reverse: ‘J. Pearse / Queen’s Robing Room / House of Lords’. The images appear to show some of the statues of the twenty-six princesses extant in the Queen’s robing room in the House of Lords, London. Pearse made carvings of princesses and robes and crowns for the ‘throne room’ (or the ‘Queen’s robing room’) in the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster.

Copy letter from Roger Casement, Pentonville Prison, to Fr. E.F. Murnane dated 16 July 1916. With a copy extract from a letter from Fr. Murnane, Presbytery, Dockhead, [Bermondsey, London, S.E.], to George Gavan Duffy (Aug. 1917). The extract reads ‘He [Casement] faced death like a gallant Irish gentleman with the added courage and confidence of a good catholic. He talked freely of his death and was looking forward to his confession …’. The copy file concludes with a copy extract from a letter from Fr. James Carey, prison chaplain, giving a brief account of Casement’s piety before his execution.

A typescript copy letter from Daniel Crowley, Royal Irish Constabulary, Ballyheihue (Ballyheigue), Tralee, County Kerry to the editor of the ‘Constabulary Gazette’ re his recollections of the Casement landing and the ‘Aud incident’. The letter is dated 21 April 1917. The letter reads ‘On Thursday the 20th April 1916 I was on patrol duty (five miles away) and noticed at about 2 pm a vessel far out to sea, a steamer, I watched her for some time, became suspicious, and on my return to Barracks I sent a constable to Kerry Head to watch her and report her to the Coast-Guard here if she was suspicious. He did so’.
