Archival Book of Holy Trinity Friary, Cork

Volume containing notes on the history and records of the Capuchin community, Holy Trinity Friary, Cork. The front cover is annotated: ‘Cork OFM Cap. Archives, July 1954’. The volume was probably begun by Fr. Michael O’Shea OFM Cap. (1892-1958) in June 1954. The title page reads: ‘Archives of Holy Trinity, Fr. Mathew Quay, Cork. Very Rev. Fr. Mel Farrell, guardian (1952)’. An annotation on the inside front cover indicates that some of the contents of the volume were extracted from archives extant in a safe in the Friary called the ‘Stairchiste’. The volume is divided into a number of sections. The listing below follows the sequence of entries as found in the volume:

Archival and Library Catalogues and Inventories

This series comprises historical catalogues and schedules of papers held in the Archives of the Capuchin Friary in Kilkenny. Some of the papers listed in these catalogues are now held in the Provincial Archives in Dublin. Other records referenced in the catalogues have evidently been lost. An election handbill quoting a letter from the Most Rev. William J. Archbishop of Dublin criticising the stance of the Irish Parliamentary Party. It reads: ‘For years past I have never had a moment’s doubt that the Irish Home Rule cause in Parliament was being led along a line that could only bring it to disaster. …’. The handbill concludes with a call to vote for W.T. Cosgrave in the Kilkenny by-election.

Archbishop Richard Cushing’s Pilgrimage to Ireland / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘cuttings’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings reflecting a wide range of literary and religious subjects. The volume includes several obituaries for prominent Irish emigrants (both religious and lay) in North America. The file also includes original photographs and ephemera relating to a pilgrimage to Ireland organised by Richard Cushing (1895-1970), Archbishop of Boston, in 1949. The photographs show Archbishop Cushing meeting various political and religious figures, including President Seán T. O’Kelly, Taoiseach John A. Costello, Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop John D’Alton, Paul A. Dever (Governor of Massachusetts), and the Capuchin friars, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. Typescript documents and ephemera are also extant in the volume, including material sourced from ‘The Advocate’ (Melbourne, Australia), and ‘The Father Mathew Record’.
