Quest books and maps

Quest books containing maps and information in relation to the Quest by the Capuchin friars in the Dioceses of Ossory and Kildare and Leighlin. The bound volumes contain manuscript maps showing various districts and a typescript list of names of names and addresses. The file also includes loose maps and lists. The corresponding lists are arranged by district (Bennets’ Bridge Village, Graignamanagh, Thomastown etc.). The entries are listed under street name or locality and (occasionally) house number, and the name of the occupying family. The books and lists were compiled and used by Fr. Timothy Connery OFM Cap.

Quest book for County Kilkenny. The volume is arranged by district (Inistioge, Graiguenamanagh and Bennets Bridge Village). The entries are listed under street name and (occasionally) house number, the name of the family (business or profession) and the amount subscribed.

Bequests

The file includes bequests in respect of Ellen Gready (of Switzers’ Asylum, Kilkenny); James Fleming (late of Poulgour, County Kilkenny); Margaret Coogan (late of Parliament Street, Kilkenny); Edward Egan (late of 15 Alderly Street, Pimlico, London); Mrs N.T. Murphy (late of Columbkille, Thomastown); Maria Kinahan (formerly of Blenheim and latterly of Dungarvan, County Waterford); Patrick Tobin (late of Tullobrin, County Kilkenny); Bridget Shorthall (formerly of Clontubrid, County Kilkenny); John Brett (late of Donaghmore, Ballyraggett, County Kilkenny).

Demand forms, correspondence, and receipts in respect of properties held by the Capuchins on Walkin Street, Kilkenny (specifically the ‘Alms house’ properties).

Third Order of St. Francis

This series contains records relating to the Third Order of St. Francis religious confraternity (later the Secular Franciscan Order) attached to the Church of St. Francis, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny.

Register book of the sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis

Register (reception book) of female members of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary in Kilkenny. The title page notes that this register excludes names from ‘the old reception book’. The entries are listed under name, address, date of reception, name of sister, by whom received, and married or single status. Occasional remarks such as ‘deceased’, departed for Dublin, America etc. are also listed for some individuals. Enclosure: A manuscript list of names of sisters of the Third Order in Kilkenny who presented a silver gilt monstrance (at a cost of £107) to the friary (19 Nov. 1909). The names and addresses of the benefactors are given. The final page of the register contains a note by Fr. Canice Bourke OFM Cap. indicating that the book has been closed and a new register opened (11 Apr. 1940).

Monthly attendance record book for the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The entries are listed under the names of professed brothers, residence, and record of attendance at monthly meetings. Some of the entry pages are titled ‘Holy Communions’. The first professed brother listed is John O’Connell (See CA KK/4/1/2).

The entries are listed under the name of the brother with his record of attendance at the (mostly weekly) meetings of the Third Order. Some of the entry pages are titled ‘Holy Communions’. The final pages of the volume contain a register of receptions from circa 1941-2 with other miscellaneous membership and subscription records. With inserts.
