A membership certificate for the ‘Wolfe Tone and Ninety Eight Memorial Association’. The document presents four scenes broadly connected with the 1798 rebellion with titles: ‘Cave Hill Compact, June 11th, 1795; Dublin, 23rd July, 1803; French Landing at Killala, August 22nd 1798; Foundation stone, National Memorial, S. Green Dublin, laid August 15th 1898’.

Membership Records of the League of Young Irish Crusaders

A membership volume associated with the League of Young Irish Crusaders. Lists of promoters of the League are given on the opening pages of the volume. The promoters are mainly drawn from Counties Dublin, Tyrone, Longford, Fermanagh, Roscommon and Wicklow. The membership entries are listed alphabetically under surname, address and age. The membership of the Crusaders was confined to children and young adults who promised to abstain from taking an intoxicating drink. Members were expected to join the Father Mathew Total Association and to become members of a local Sacred Thirst Sodality. A good number of pages in the volume remain blank.

Bound volume containing a register of members of Father Mathew Hall, Church Street. The listing is divided into male and female. The list includes entries relating to dues for subscription payments and membership fees. Later entries also supply addresses of registered members.

The volume appears to be incomplete although a listing of about seventy members is extant on the first two pages.

Memoir of Canon James Casey

Autobiographical memoir of Canon James Casey (1824-1909). At pp 21-6 reference is made to Casey having taken the pledge from Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC on 22 Sept. 1840. He writes ‘I remember well the crowds and the crushing. … The people were got to kneel down in rows while enthusiastic priests rode among the vast multitude to keep order. The great and special graces showered down that day will never be known till the day of judgement’.
