Sacred Thirst Sodality Badges

Five linen badges of the Sacred Thirst Sodality attached to the Capuchin Friary, Church Street, Dublin. The badges are in a small leather pouch.

Printing Block

Printing block used to reproduce the shield symbol of the Father Mathew Total Abstinence Association. The printing block was probably used in the production of pledge certificates in the mid-twentieth century.

Mass Intentions Record Book

The volume contains double entries giving a daily record of ‘mass intentions to be fulfilled’ and ‘mass intentions fulfilled’ at the Friary Church, Kilkenny. The title is given on the first page: ‘1866 Mass Registry, Kilkenny’. The entries are listed under date, the person for whom the mass was said, and the amount of stipend money received. The final page provides a summary of the mass intentions for May 1869 and is signed by Fr. Edward Tommins OSFC, guardian, 2 June 1869.

Register of Masses

Register of masses at the Church of St. Francis, Kilkenny. The title is extant on the verso of the first page: ‘Mass book, Friary, Kilkenny, 1 Jan. 1910’. The entries include the signatures of the celebrants. The entries were routinely signed by the Provincial Minster at visitations.

Framed Temperance Society Pledge Card

An original total abstinence pledge card of Jonathon Murphy dated 4 Nov. 1839. The card is signed by Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. Manuscript annotations on the card indicate that the pledge was renewed on 31 Aug. 1860 and 17 Mar. 1864.

Temperance Society Pledge Card

An original certificate of enrollment of Robert Cosgrove in St. Paul’s Temperance Society, Dublin, dated 5 Apr. 1840. With a letter from Ellen Weedon to Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. affirming that the pledge card belonged to her grandfather. The letter is dated 18 Apr. 1927.

Temperance Society Pledge Card

An original total abstinence pledge card of Charles Doherty dated 7 Nov. 1847. The card is signed by Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC. With a cover letter (1 Aug. 2001) from Liam O’Connell referring to this item. The letter notes that his ancestor (Charles Doherty) took the pledge in St. Peter’s Pro-Cathedral in Belfast. He also encloses an advertisement from Cantrell & Cochrane, Mineral and Aerated Water Manufacturer, referring to the Apostle of Temperance [c.1900].
