Emancipation Centenary, Phoenix Park, Dublin

A scene from a mass gathering held in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 23 June 1929 to mark the centenary of Catholic Emancipation. The caption to the photograph indicates that an individual had fainted (on what was, by all accounts, a very warm day) and required some medical assistance.

An image of Edward Byrne, Archbishop of Dublin, blessing the foundation stone for the Church of Saint Anne in Shankill in County Dublin. A typescript annotation on the reverse of the print reads: 'Laying the foundation stone of new Dublin church / 27 July 1931 / The Archbishop of Dublin yesterday blessed and laid the foundation stone for the new Church of St. Anne at Shankill, Dublin / The Archbishop of Dublin praying at the foot of the cross surrounded by a huge congregation'. A view of Cromwell’s Arch in Youghal, County Cork, in about 1945. It was from here on 26 May 1650 that Oliver Cromwell departed Ireland having overwintered in the town following his military campaign in the country.
