Letter from John D. Crimmins, Emmet Arcade, 624 Madison Avenue, to Patrick Pearse, New York, regarding a contribution to the St. Enda’s School fund.

Letter to Patrick Pearse from A. Brendan Ford, editor, ‘New York Freeman’s Journal and Catholic Register’, 13 Barclay Street, New York. Ford suggests that Pearse has ‘one of the highest gifts from the Gods – the trick of swaying hearts with your words’. The letter appears be incomplete.

Letter to Patrick Pearse, Turlough, Rosmuck, County Galway, from Thomas F. O’Connell, solicitor, 34 Kildare Street, Dublin. The letter refers to arrears of rent due on the Hermitage in Rathfarnham. It reads ‘Whatever arrangement may in the future be considered as to leaving you in possession for the present in [the] Hermitage as tenant at a lower rent, this must not be allowed to interfere with your obligation to pay the rent for the past half year’.

Memorandum and Articles of Association of Scoil Éanna. The booklet contains manuscript additions of names, addresses and descriptions of subscribers including ‘Patrick H. Pearse, St. Enda’s College, Rathfarnham, barrister-at-law, William Pearse, St. Enda’s College, Rathfarnham, sculptor’, and ‘Thomas MacDonagh, 32 Upper Baggot Street, Dublin, tutor’. Two sets of signatures with one noting the number of shares taken by each subscriber. The signatures are dated 2 January 1912. The objective of the memorandum is ‘to acquire and take over the Colleges, known as Scoil Éanna and Scoil Ide, now carried on at Rathfarnham, in the County of Dublin, and at Cullenswood Avenue, County of Dublin, with the goodwill of Mr. P.H. Pearse therein …’.

A poster advertising an ‘Aeridheacht’ (or open day) at St. Enda’s School in Rathfarnham, Dublin. Patrick Pearse regularly organised an ‘Aeridheacht’ on the grounds of the school to support Scoil Éanna. These events were also used to promote the Irish language, music, sports, and customs.

An account extract for St. Enda’s School. Includes entries re liabilities and assets. References are made to ‘pupils’ fees paid’, laundry expenses, medical bills, and ‘grazing rents’. An entry refers to an overdraft from the Hibernian Bank ‘secured by lease of Cullenswood House, life insurance …’. The extract appears to be in the hand of Patrick Pearse.

A flier advertising a concert in the Mansion House in Dublin in aid of the family of Sylvester Pidgeon who died on 28 September 1914 from wounds sustained in the Bachelor’s Walk massacre which took place in Dublin on 26 July 1914. A printer by trade, Sylvester Pidgeon left behind a widow and five children ranging in age from three months to eleven.

Notes in both English and Irish probably written by Patrick Pearse. Includes a sketch, possibly of the medieval Christian monastery on St. Macdara’s Island off the coast of County Galway. Also includes references to St. Enda, a sixth-century saint who founded a Christian monastic settlement on Inis Mór, and Mochuda of Lismore who ‘did fishing’.
