Annual reports and statements of accounts of Father Mathew Hall, Church Street. The booklets provide reports on annual general meetings, activities, speeches and events held in the Hall and provide annual accounts of receipts and expenditure. The 1901 report (pp 20-3) gives an account of a speech by Pádraig Pearse in the Hall on 2 March 1902 commending the giving of classes ‘for the study of our native language, and forms of self-culture amongst our members.’ He added ‘There is a certain bad old tradition that one cannot be a good Irishman unless he “takes a dhrop”. Now, I think you will all allow if there is one body in Ireland which is concerned more than another for the maintenance of genuine Irish traditions, that body is the Gaelic League … [and] in the ranks of no body in Ireland will you find proportionally so many total abstainers as in those of the Gaelic League’. Pearse suggested that there should be more cooperation between the Gaelic League and the temperance movement. In 1906, it was reported (p. 20) that ‘owing to several exceptional expenses, rendered necessary by the increase of membership and the extension of temperance work, we have not been able to reduce our indebtedness to the Bank’. The statement of accounts noted that £1,405 6s 5d was owed to the National Bank by December 1906. The front covers of the booklets have ink drawings of the Hall fronting onto Church Street.

According to the printed statement on the accompanying page, Stephen Gorman aka James O’Reilly of Ballyblia, Ardee, County Louth, was arrested on 11 September 1922 while travelling on a weekend visit to Drogheda. The documents relate to an application by the Trust for a sale of the trustee’s interest in 17 Friary Street located at the junction of Friary Street and Garden Row with the yard at the rear thereof held by the Capuchin Order under a fee farm grant dated 29 Oct. 1898. Application forms for the position of caretaker in Father Mathew Hall, Church Street. The file includes a draft contract and a memorandum on the duties and responsibilities of the position. The memorandum (which was approved by the Hall Committee on 28 June 1926) specified that the caretaker ‘must of necessity be a total abstainer and in person be well groomed and presentable on all public occasions’.
Documents relating to an application to the Commissioners of Charitable Donation and Bequests for Ireland for the appointment of Fr. Eustace McSweeney OFM Cap., Fr. Donal O’Mahony OFM Cap., and Fr. Peter Rodgers OFM Cap. (FMC) as trustees of various properties in Cork. The file includes a statutory declaration to be signed by the Capuchin friars and a copy of the order from the Charitable Commissioners confirming the appointment of the FMC members as trustees. The attached schedule provides particulars of the title to the various premises in Cork held by the Capuchins including Holy Trinity Church, the adjacent Friary and other properties such as Father Mathew Hall, and the friary, school and farm at Rochestown, County Cork (31 Mar. 1987).

The volume includes several obituaries for prominent Irish emigrants (both religious and lay) in North America. The file also includes original photographs and ephemera relating to a pilgrimage to Ireland organised by Richard Cushing (1895-1970), Archbishop of Boston, in 1949. The photographs show Archbishop Cushing meeting various political and religious figures, including President Seán T. O’Kelly, Taoiseach John A. Costello, Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop John D’Alton, Paul A. Dever (Governor of Massachusetts), and the Capuchin friars, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. Typescript documents and ephemera are also extant in the volume, including material sourced from ‘The Advocate’ (Melbourne, Australia), and ‘The Father Mathew Record’.
