Report on the Capuchin Temperance Mission

Report on the Capuchin Temperance Mission in Ireland compiled by Fr. Thomas Dowling OSFC (1874-1951) , Provincial Minister, in response to a request from the General Minister of the Order in Rome. The report refers to the progress of the temperance crusade in Ireland and includes information on the number of missions preached and total abstinence pledges taken. The report notes that the Capuchins have ‘administered the Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion to 1,200 on each Mission. … We have given the pledge to an average of 800 in each Parish and have a record of having administered the Pledge since the beginning of this Crusade to 1,141,191’. (p. 10). It also includes favourable testimonials from the Irish Catholic hierarchy and other prominent figures. The principal headings in the report are as follows:

Report on Church Street Properties

Report by Gráinne Mallon & Associates, 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, in association with Shane Redmond, auctioneer, on the properties held by the Capuchin Order on Church Street. The report delineates the existing properties held by the Capuchin Order (ecclesiastical premises, the Friary, Father Mathew Hall and the Day Centre) and makes recommendations in respect of rationalising the use of the properties in the context of urban renewal and development schemes proposed for the area. With a cover letter from Shane Redmond. The file also includes copy maps and plans. The cover is endorsed: ‘Carried out by Fr. Dan Joe O’Mahony OFM Cap. with a view to selling Father Mathew Hall’. With a letter from Shane Redmond (28 Oct. 1997) recommending that the ‘Order examine the many options the property can generate and that a decision may be taken about the future of its most influential friary in the capital city, based on the level of services the Capuchins will be able to provide there in the new millennium’.

The rental includes entries under the headings of ‘denominations, tenant’s names, gale days, yearly rents, total due, total received, allowances, arrears and observations’. The denominations include premises on Queen Street (a portion of the Assembly Rooms) and on Father Mathew Quay, the latter of which is occupied by the Capuchin friars. The yearly rents amount to £151 5s 6d.
