A large bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘The North / Partition / Northern Ireland’. The volume contains original letters and draft manuscript and typescript contributions and commentary re the ‘Orange Terror’ article by 'Ultach' (J.J. Campbel) published in ‘The Capuchin Annual’ (1943). The file includes letters from Bishop Daniel Mageean, George Noble Plunkett, J.J. Campbell, Eamon Donnelly, Senator David Robinson, Maud Gonne MacBride, Jack B. Yeats (refusing to contribute a commentary on the article), and Sir Shane Leslie. The volume also contains many general newspaper clippings about partition. The volume also includes a printed flier from Ailtirí na hAiséirghe (1943). The volume includes content mainly from 1941-9 but it also includes some newspaper and magazine clippings from c.1917-1932, particularly relating to the treatment of the Catholic minority in Northern Ireland. ‘Paget Prize Plate Co., Ltd., Watford’ box. The box contains a manuscript note which reads: ‘With Fr. Russell’s compliments. Negatives of Thomastown Castle, County Tipperary. Front and back views. Maynooth, 27 Nov. 1913’. The box contains three glass plate negatives. A front and rear view of Thomastown Castle, the childhood home of Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC (1790-1856), and a photographic image of a letter from Fr. Mathew. Thomastown Castle, near Golden in County Tipperary, was a large country house built by the Mathew family. The earliest house on this site was built by George Mathew and dated to c.1670. The house was enlarged in the Gothic style by Francis Mathew, 2nd Earl of Llandaff, in 1812. The renowned Irish architect, Richard Morrison (1767-1849), redesigned the house incorporating several Gothic features including the ornate towers on the front elevation. Thomastown Castle was the childhood home of Fr. Theobold Mathew OSFC who abandoned a life of privilege to become a Capuchin friar. By the late nineteenth century the fortunes of the Mathew family had declined, and Thomastown Castle had fallen into ruins and the estate was completely abandoned. The ‘Fr. Russell’ referred to in the manuscript note in the file is probably Fr. Mathew Russell, editor of ‘The Irish Monthly’.
‘Barnet Red Seal Plate’ (Elliot & Sons, Ltd., Barnet, England) box. The box contains nineteen slides. None of the plates have annotations or captions and most of the descriptive content has been inferred. The box includes the following images: (a) A junior football team. The ball is annotated with a date of 1908. (b) Two images of Fr. Aloysius Travers OFM Cap. at a hurling match at Croke Park, Dublin, and at the head of a temperance procession. (c) The hallway of Rochestown Capuchin Friary, County Cork. (d) A group of Capuchin friars with musical instruments in the Kilkenny Friary in c.1905. The group includes Fr. Ignatius Collins OFM Cap. and Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. (e) A group of Capuchin friars in Kilkenny in about 1905. The title, ‘Conradh na Gaeilge’ (Gaelic League), has been superimposed on the original glass plate. (f) Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. with a group of students possibly at a hurling match in Rochestown, County Cork.
A large bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Father Senan & Father Gerald’. The volume contains photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera relating to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and Fr. Gerald McCann OFM Cap., editors at the Irish Capuchin Publications Office. It includes images of the sculptural busts of the two friars by Laurence Campbell (1911-2001) and some photographs of both attending various social gatherings. A biographical sketch of Fr. Senan published in the 'Connacht Sentinel' (4 Feb. 1941) is also extant in the volume. It also includes correspondence and ephemera relating to Fr. Senan’s membership of the Mark Twain Society in the United States. The volume is not paginated, and a good portion of the pages are blank.
Statements of account of the Third Order of St. Francis, Kilkenny. The statements include receipts and expenditure accounts for 1923, 1933, 1934 and 1936.
Minute book of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The volume records minutes of meetings of the council of the Third Order. The minutes provide information in respect of attendance, elections, professions, pilgrimages and others events organised by the local Third Order fraternity. The minutes are signed by spiritual directors.
Expenditure and receipt account book of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. Expenditure accounts include monies for monthly masses, quests, habits and scapulars, and wages for lay staff (such as ‘tertiary chapel woman’). Receipts include monies derived principally from member subscriptions.
Will of Concubhar Ó Muíneacháin, St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny dated 4 Feb. 1931. He bequeaths £350 ‘for masses for my parents, brothers, sisters and self, to the guardian for the time being of the Friary, Kilkenny’ and appoints James Henry and the president of the Third Order attached to the Friary in Kilkenny as his executors. He leaves his books and manuscripts to the Capuchin Friary at Ard Mhuire, County Donegal. The file includes his stock and share certificates (for varying amounts) from the Dublin United Tramways Company, the Keystone Knitting Mills and the Irish-American Oil Company Limited.
