Clement Neubauer OFM Cap., Minister General, re the Irish Capuchin missions in Africa, elections of Regular Superiors and Discreets, appointments, and arrangements for visitations. Father Mathew Record Missionary Clippings

Clippings from the mission pages of 'The Father Mathew Record' pasted into an accounts’ journal. The articles publicise the work of the Irish Capuchin missionaries in South Africa and in Northern Rhodesia. Some of the early articles also refer to missionary work undertaken by foreign Capuchin friars in India and in other parts of Asia. The clippings include articles referring to the work of Fr. Declan McFadden OFM Cap., Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap., Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea, Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. and Fr. Fintan Roche OFM Cap. The articles are illustrated with numerous photographs.

Boxed 8 films (Scotch magnetic tape reels). The reels are 15 cm in diameter. The two films are endorsed: ‘St. Helena Part I’ and ‘St. Helena and Ascension [Island]’. Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap. served as parish priest on St. Helena from 1957-64.

Scrapbook of Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap.

Scrapbook of Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap. containing notes relating to his work as a missionary primarily in Northern Rhodesia. Fr. Alfred describes journeying to a village in Barotseland: ‘Enter a village – children run out of it to wave to us, the younger and more timid kids who have never seen a white [man] scuttle and bawl like stuck pigs – probably they have been told if they are naughty they will be handed over to “the big bad white man”’. The memoir contains notes re local customs, death and marriage rituals, village life, pastimes, sanitation, race, witchcraft and superstitions. Other headings include ‘meetings and oratory’, ‘progress towards civilisation’, dancing and ‘African Albinos – saw 2 only up to today, 10 June 1947’. Other sections include notes on the Union of South Africa, the Lozi language and the Bantu people of Northern Rhodesia. With a newspaper clipping of a photograph showing Sir John Waddington, Governor of Northern Rhodesia, and Imwiko, Paramount Chief of Barotse, on the occasion of the Governor’s farewell visit to Barotseland in 1947. Printed stamp on front cover reads: ‘Sancta Maria Catholic Mission. Fr. Alfred O’Mahony. 7th June 1947’.

School Report Diary of Fr. Luke Browne OFM Cap.

Reports on school inspections in the Northern Rhodesian mission compiled by Fr. Luke Browne OFM Cap. The reports are chronological and give information on the physical condition of the schools, the numbers of pupils and teachers, attendance, and the catechism and subjects taught in the schools. Reference is made to schools in Lusense, Schuckmannsburg (now Luhonono in the Caprivi Strip), Sichili, Kasika and Twambo.

Notes on the history of Barotseland and the Lozi People

Two copybooks containing notes by Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap. on the history of Barotseland and the Lozi, the cultural group of peoples inhabiting the western province of Zambia. The notes refer to the impact of European colonization, to the work of religious missionaries in the area, and to the Zambian independence movement.

The installation of Msgr. Adrian Mung’andu as Bishop of Livingstone

Ceremonial for the consecration of Monsignor Adrian Mung’andu as Bishop of Livingstone on 9 Feb. 1975 at the Church of Christ the King, Maramba Mission, in succession to Bishop Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. At the mass, Fr. Alfred O’Mahony OFM Cap. preached a sermon on the history of the Irish Capuchin presence in Zambia. With a flier re the ordination written by Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap.

The Diocese of Livingstone Remembers

An article by Fr. Luke Browne OFM Cap. referring to a ceremony held on 5 May 1991 recalling the sacrifice of Br. Louis de Vylder SJ, the first Catholic missionary to die in Barotseland. Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Raymond Mpezele, Bishop of Livingstone, who was assisted by several Irish Capuchin friars. The article cutting is probably taken from 'The Capuchin' magazine.

Zambian Christmas Cards

Fragmentary Christmas cards used by the Capuchins friars in Zambia. One of the cards has been used by the friars in Mangango and is dated December 1992. With some enclosed original Zambian postage stamps.
