An image of Jamestown, the largest settlement on the island of Saint Helena. Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap. (1902-1983) was the only resident Catholic priest on the island from 1957 to 1964. The Sacred Heart Church (built in 1852) in Jamestown is visible in the image. Fr. Jarlath's principal achievement was the restoration of this church. An image of a woman kissing the Blarney Stone. Blarney Castle is a fifteenth-century tower house located in County Cork. According to legend, kissing the stone (which is built into the battlements of the castle) bestows upon the person the gift of eloquence, flattery, and persuasiveness. Though earlier fortifications were built on the site, the current castle structure was constructed in 1446 by the MacCarthys of Muskerry, a branch of the Kings of Desmond.
An image captioned 'Dominion Monarch / 1947'. The photograph shows a line-crossing ceremony on the ship, an initiation rite that commemorates a person's first crossing of the Equator. Built in England between 1937 and 1939, the 'Dominion Monarch' was a passenger liner which regularly operated services between Britain and ports in the southern hemisphere (particularly in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand).
