Religious Sisters in Africa

A collection of black and white and colour photographic prints associated with the work of religious sisters mainly in Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia). Most of the prints are not captioned. The file includes prints collected for publication in 'The Capuchin Annual' and 'The Father Mathew Record'. The captioned photographs include:
• Sisters in a garden with African children, Basutoland (later Lesotho).
• A sister and an African worker draining a marshy area.
• ‘The sisters wear white habits when nursing’. (The Father Mathew Record).
• Nurses’ accommodation – ‘Sister and nurses sitting on a Basutoland blanket with students’. (Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, South Africa).

Record of Baptisms at the Loanja Mission

Notebook containing a record of the baptisms at the Loanja mission, Bartoseland, Northern Rhodesia. The record (which includes entries of adult baptisms and references to 'articulo mortis' or 'at the moment of death') was compiled by Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap. (1897-1980). The entries are listed under local (birth) name, tribe, village, Christian name, date of baptism, minister officiating, date, and in some instances date of death and place of burial. The end pages of the volume also contain miscellaneous notes re baptisms at the mission. With manuscript annotations (in Irish) by Fr. Padraig Ó Cuill OFM Cap. re Fr. Seraphin.

Procedures for application for residency in South Africa

File relating to the procedures for applications for temporary and permanent residency permits in South Africa. The file includes copy correspondence from the Most Rev. John T. Dunkin, Bishop of Louis Trichardt-Tzaneen, and circulars from the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference to the Major Religious Superiors and Local Ordinaries. The documents refer to the difficulties encountered by Catholic religious in obtaining permits to work in Apartheid-era South Africa. One of the circulars affirms that ‘if asked, state that you are to minister to Whites … in such and such an area. It is recommended that you do NOT state that you are coming to minister to Blacks’.

A collection of black and white photographic prints mostly relating to Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Prefect Apostolic of Victoria Falls from 1936-50. Most of the prints have been captioned by his nephew, Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap. and some were published in Mgr. Killian Flynn as seen from his letters (Ndola, 2003). The file includes prints of Fr. Killian:
