Financial Returns for the African Missions

Financial statements for the African missions founded by the Irish Capuchin friars. The file includes:
• Note re income derived from masses in the Livingstone (Northern Rhodesia) and in the Cape Town (South Africa) missions from 1931-4.
• Statement of income and expenditure for the Livingstone and Cape Town missions submitted to the Provincial Minister and Defintiory, 17 Jan. 1935.
• Statement of income and expenditure for the Victoria Falls Prefecture compiled by Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Prefect Apostolic, and Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap. 15 May 1937.
• Financial account for the Victoria Falls Mission from July 1947 to July 1948.

Foreign Missionary Exhibition

Accounts, publicity material (catalogue) and correspondence relating to the Foreign Missionary Exhibition held at 86 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, 17-25 June 1932. The official catalogue includes a list of items displayed by the friars relating to their missionary work in Africa and a photographic print of the Capuchin exhibition stand. The file also includes display cards and captions for the artefacts exhibited by the Capuchins at the event. The caption cards read as follows:

Foreign Missions’ Account Book

Ledger of loans and monies supplied to the Irish Capuchin missions in Africa compiled by Fr. Kieran O’Callaghan OFM Cap., Provincial Secretary. The ledger includes records of money supplied to Fr. Alban Cullen OFM Cap. and Fr. Oliver O’Hanlon OFM Cap. to build parish churches in Athlone and Parow, Cape Town, in March 1933. £1,700 was given to Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap. to build a friary (14 June 1937), and £1,000 was given to Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. for Livingstone Church in Northern Rhodesia. The accounts also include monies derived from the Seraphic Mass Association (SMA) from Aug. 1931-Jan. 1935. The accounts are signed are by Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. Provincial Minister, 10 Aug. 1937.

Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap. in Zambia

File of photographic prints relating to visits by Fr. Albert Hayes OFM Cap. (1915-2005) to Zambia. Most of the prints are not captioned but include prints of the grave of Bishop Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. at Lukulu Mission taken in January 1985. Other prints show Fr. Albert greeting Zambian clerics and religious sisters and attending meetings.

A collection of photographic prints documenting the visitation of the Zambian Vice-Province by Fr. Eustace McSweeney OFM Cap., Provincial Minister. Includes images of Fr. Eustace with Fr. Bruno McKnight OFM Cap., Regular Superior, Fr. Michael Duffy OFM Cap., Fr. Edwin Flynn OFM Cap., Fr. John Grace OFM Cap., Fr. Eugene Mooney OFM Cap., Fr. Philip Baxter OFM Cap., and Fr. Noel Brennan OFM Cap. The file includes images of the grave of Bishop Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. in Lukulu, the grave of Fr. Gerald Joyce OFM Cap. (d. 15 July 1944), superior of St. Patrick’s Mission in Sihole, Kalabo, and the first missionary to die in the Victoria Falls Prefecture, visits to Capuchin mission stations and parishes, the Chinyingi Suspension Bridge built by the Capuchin friars, religious sisters at hospitals and schools, and local inhabitants of the Western Province of Zambia.

Boxed 8 films (Scotch magnetic tape reels). The reels are 15 cm in diameter. The two films are endorsed: ‘St. Helena Part I’ and ‘St. Helena and Ascension [Island]’. Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap. served as parish priest on St. Helena from 1957-64.

Photographic prints of Fr. Ronan Herlihy OFM Cap. undertaking a trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana. The prints have been placed in sleeves in a folder which is annotated: ‘A Day in Chobe / April 1983’. The prints mostly show wild animals and river crossings associated with the trip.

A collection of prints including many of Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap. (Bishop of Livingstone from 1959-74). Most of the prints are un-captioned. The file includes prints collected for publication in 'The Capuchin Annual'. The captioned photographs include:
• Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap., Fr. Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. and Fr. Seraphin Nesdale OFM Cap. in Northern Rhodesia in c.1931. The images were probably taken during a trip to Victoria Falls.
