Letters re attendance and cessation of membership of the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. The letters refer to cessation of active membership as a brother and registration as an isolated tertiary.

Letters from [Madge Auld?], St. Andrew’s, Queen’s Crescent, Southsea, Hampshire, to Fr. Seraphin Van Damme OSFC (1820-1887), referring to a sum of £300 left in trust with Fr. Laurence O’Dea OSFC ‘to build a chapel [in Kilkenny] where the Third Order Sisters would meet and masses be said for me and mine’. An annotation notes that these letters were from the ‘late Mrs Sullivan of Lacken, Kilkenny’.

Memoranda of agreements from Fr. Conrad O’Donovan OFM Cap., guardian, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, for the yearly lease of stores and premises on Pennyfeather Lane. The file includes agreements with Nial Godwin, High Street, Kilkenny, at £7 yearly (30 Dec. 1948); with John Carrigan, The Parade, Kilkenny, at £7 yearly (5 Jan. 1949); with Quality Shoes Ltd. at £18 yearly (20 Jan. 1949). Letter from James G. Robertson to Fr. James Edward Tommins, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, granting permission to remove a building which the Capuchins hold from the late Lady Harty. 29 May 1876; Memorandum of agreement (dated 19 May 1896) by James G. Robertson, Merton Cullenswood, County Dublin, to Fr. Jarlath Hynes, Superior, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, and Fr. Matthew O’Connor, for the yearly letting of a dwelling house on Walkin Street at present vacant but formerly in the occupation of Miss Moore at £16 per annum. With an identical agreement (bearing the same date) amended to indicate that Richard Samuel Owen Robinson and Rev. Andrew Craig Robinson, 5 Fisher Street, Kinsale, County Cork, are the lessors; Letting agreement (dated 4 Jan. 1900) for the said premises at £16 yearly; Letting agreement to Fr. Jarlath Hynes OSFC of the dwelling house on Walkin Street lately occupied by Mary Stapleton immediately adjoining the Capuchin Friary at the yearly rent of £16. With copy. See also CA KK/2/1/1/1/14.

List of donations to the Tertiary Chapel Building Fund, Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The volume relates to donations made almost solely by women (including many members of the Third Order of St. Francis). Entries are initially listed as an index under the name of the subscriber, her address, and the amount of the donation. The remainder of the volume is comprised of an alphabetical list of monthly subscribers. Additional notes are occasionally added to the entries such as ‘Miss Bergin left for Australia in March 1896’. Gilt title to front cover reads ‘Ledger’.

List of guardians of the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, from 1842-1883 compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. The list includes their dates of office. The file also includes notes by Fr. Angelus re Fr. Edward Tommins OSFC (d. 29 July 1889), Fr. Columbus Maher OSFC (1835-1894) and Fr. Cherubini Mazzini OSFC (1831-1906), guardians from c.1855-68.

The obediences are listed under the headings of date, ‘from’ [usually the letter of obedience is from the Provincial Minister or Definitory], to [the name of the friar to which the obedience is addressed] and ‘import’ [place of transfer]’. The list would appear to have particular reference to transfers to and from the Friary in Kilkenny.

List of scared vessels and other relics extant in the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The list includes ‘Cross containing relic of the true cross and relics of the saints’, ‘Three large missals’ and ‘a set of gold vestments’. The lists include descriptions, measurements, and details of inscriptions on the various sacred vessels. Reference is also made to the Terence Coghlan Chalice currently held in the Irish Capuchin Archives.
