Bequests

Letter from Nicholas Healy, solicitor, High Street, Kilkenny, to Fr. Matthew O’Connor OFM Cap., guardian, regarding a charitable legacy of £20 left by Julia Quirke, late of Rathclogh for masses for the repose of her soul and the souls of her deceased brother, sister, and parents at a stipend of 10s for each mass. With a letter from Michael Buggy & Co., solicitors, Parliament Street, re £50 left by Esther White, deceased, ‘for the benefit of the Poor people occupying the Alms House in Walkin Street …’.

Bequests

Letter from John Lanigan & Nolan, solicitors, 81 High Street, Kilkenny, to Fr. Bonaventure Murphy OFM Cap., guardian, enclosing a copy of the will of Margaret Carthy (d. 6 Mar. 1940) in which she leaves the sum of £5 for masses to be said for the repose of her soul. The solicitors assert that ‘there are not sufficient assets to meet any of the legacies contained in the will of deceased, as all available monies will go towards paying her funeral expenses …’.

Income and expenditure accounts for the Capuchin community, Walkin Street, Kilkenny. Includes statements of accounts from 9 Aug. 1910-10 Aug. 1913; Aug. 1910-June 1911; July 1911-May 1912; June 1912-May 1913. The accounts are signed by Fr. Chrysostom Sutton OSFC.

Register book of sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis

Register (reception book) of the female members of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary in Kilkenny. The entries are listed under date of reception, name, name in religion, address and by whom professed. Occasional remarks such as ‘deceased’ or ‘gone to Dublin’ are included for some individuals. The final page of the register contains a note by Fr. Canice Bourke OFM Cap. indicating that the book has been closed and a new register opened (11 Apr. 1940).

Memoranda re books in Kilkenny Friary Library

Memoranda re books held in the Kilkenny Friary Library. The notes were probably compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. and Fr. Stanislaus Kavanagh OFM Cap. Particular reference is made to annotations, marginalia and inscriptions found on the frontispieces of the volumes. Some of the memoranda are very fragmentary and incomplete. Many of the books referred to in the memoranda are now extant in the Provincial Archives. See CA KK/10 for a listing of some these texts from the Kilkenny Friary Library.

Archival reference book for the holdings in the Library of the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. The title of the volume (Eason’s blank-index notebook) is annotated: ‘Archivium … fiosrú 1945 – an 14 Márta ‘45’. The final page of the volume contains a map showing the physical arrangement of the stacks in the archive made by Fr. Hubert Grealy OFM Cap. Includes references to ‘capitular enactments’, ‘appointments of guardians and vicars’ and ‘deeds, leases etc’.

Letter from Robert Branigan, secretary, to Fr. Joseph Fenlon OSFC, guardian, forwarding a copy motion from a meeting of the council of the Third Order regarding the erection of ‘a suitable memorial tablet’ in the Church of St. Francis in memory of the lately deceased Fr. Chrysostom Sutton OSFC, formerly spiritual director of the Third Order.
