Located in the Diocese of Cork and Ross, this neo-classical church was built between 1826 and 1832 to a design by the Cork-born architect, Michael Augustine O'Riordan (c.1783-1848), a Presentation Brother.

The building was a Catholic place of worship from 1816 until the new Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas was opened in 1965. The former Saint Nicholas Cathedral was deconsecrated and the building now houses a variety of retail outlets.
