A view of biplanes (and a autogyro) over Longford Town in about 1935. The larger plane is apparently an Airspeed Ferry, a ten-seat passenger biplane built in the early 1930s. The photograph is related to an aviation display organised by Alan Cobham (1894-1973). Cobham organised displays of various aircraft, ranging from single-seaters to modern airliners, with many skilled pilots. He toured both Britain and Ireland, calling at hundreds of sites, some of them regular airfields and some just fields cleared for the occasion. Generally known as ‘Cobham's Flying Circus’, it was hugely popular, giving thousands of people their first experience of flying. These displays continued until about 1935.
An image of a peat collector in the Sperrin Mountain range in County Tyrone. An annotation on the reverse reads 'Bringing home the turf / Seen in the Sperrin Mountains'. The photograph was taken by James Roland Bainbridge (1891-1967).
A view (taken from City Hall) looking down Parliament Street towards Grattan Bridge and beyond to Capel Street in Dublin. On the left in the image are the offices of the ‘Evening Mail’ newspaper located on the corner of Parliament Street and Cork Hill.
An image of an outdoor (clothing and shoe) street market, most likely in the vicinity of the old Moore Street market area in Dublin. The image may possibly show stalls on either Horseman’s Row or Coles Lane in this area (the present-day Ilac Centre now covers this site).
