Sinn Féin Election Manifesto

A manifesto issued by Sinn Féin during the general election for the Fourth Dáil (27 August 1923). The first line of the text reads ‘The Sinn Féin candidates in this Election stand as they have stood in every election since 1917, for the unity and untrammelled independence of Ireland. Like Padraig Pearse they know but one definition of freedom ...’.

A clipping of a report on various Sinn Féin meetings and demonstrations in the country. Reference is made to speeches made by Darrel Figgis and George Noble Plunkett. The report was published in the ‘Irish Independent’ (20 September 1917).

Signed Menu Card for Cardinal John Joseph Glennon Reception

A signed menu card for a reception marking the visit of Cardinal John Joseph Glennon to Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin. The card is signed by Cardinal Glennon. It is also signed by Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh (Seán T. O’Kelly), the President of Ireland, and by his wife Phyllis Bean Úi Cheallaigh (Phyllis O’Kelly). The other signatures are those of Taoiseach Éamon de Valera, Seán Mac an tSaoi (Seán MacEntee), the Minister of Health, and Séamus Ó Riain (James Ryan), the Minister of Agriculture. Cardinal Glennon died five days later in Dublin (9 March 1946). His body lay in repose in All Hallows College (his old seminary) before being returned to the United States for burial in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

Sidney Royse Lysaght (1860-1941

Draft article by Edward MacLysaght titled ‘S.R. Lysaght: The Author and the Man’. The file also contains a copy manuscript titled ‘Another Imaginary Conversation / 3 Dec. 1931’ compiled for an article titled: ‘Sidney Royce Lysaght: the author and the man’, published in 'The Capuchin Annual' (1975), pp 225-229. The piece was written by Edward MacLysaght. The manuscript refers to family reminiscences pertaining especially to his father, Sidney Royse Lysaght (1860-1941), an Irish writer, who worked in the iron industry. His son, Edward MacLysaght (1887-1986), was a writer and authority on Irish family history. The file also includes two copies of ‘The amazing war experiences of Patrick Lysaght / An Irishman of the Royal Irish Rifles / the first unit to meet the Germans at Mons in 1914’. It is noted that this narrative was first recorded in December 1938.

Shop Street, Galway

A view of Shop Street in Galway City in about 1955. The street is the principal thoroughfare through Galway. As the name suggests, it is the city’s main shopping street, and contains numerous old brick buildings, storefronts, and an array of bars. To the right in the photograph is Lynch’s Castle, the only complete secular medieval building left standing in Galway.
