She left government in protest over the adoption of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and was a vociferous opponent of the agreement in the ensuing the Civil War. She travelled to the United States in early 1922 as a republican delegate and her lecture tour in the country (she visited Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia) aroused considerable interest.
