A sizeable portion of the gardens were later used as the site for the National Garden of Remembrance in the 1960s. The Hugh Lane Gallery is situated in the building recessed at the right, with the Coláiste Mhuire buildings at the far end of the street.

The steamship in the background is the ‘Innisfallen’, built in 1930 for the City of Cork Steam Packet Company. The ‘Innisfallen’ was lost during the Second World War when she struck a mine off Wirral Shore whilst sailing to Liverpool.
