The caption notes that though Sheehy-Skeffington was ‘shot as a rebel – his death is now the subject of a court-martial’. It also notes that his wife’s family (Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington) has many family members serving in the British armed forces including Lieutenant Eugene Sheehy who ‘fought with the [Royal] Dublin fusiliers against the rebels’. The newspaper title from which the clipping was taken is not given.

A view of James (Jamesie) O'Flaherty in Kilronan, the main settlement on Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, in about 1935. An annotation on the reverse of the print reads: ‘A special kind of footgear has been developed for negotiating the slabs of limestone with which the island is covered. Called the “Pampootie”, it is contrived of raw cowhide. In the photograph, an islander is seen making himself a pair of these novel shoes’.

As the name suggests, it is the city’s main shopping street, and contains numerous old brick buildings, storefronts, and an array of bars. To the right in the photograph is Lynch’s Castle, the only complete secular medieval building left standing in Galway.
