Franciscan Monastery, Roundstone, County Galway

A view of the old Franciscan Monastery just outside the village of Roundstone in County Galway in about 1960. The Franciscan Brothers left Roundstone and their monastery was sold to the Irish Development Authority (IDA) in 1974. The building was subsequently demolished, and the site was repurposed by the IDA into Michael Killeen Park, a small indigenous craft centre with various factory shops. All that remains of the former monastery is the bell tower.

Shop Street, Galway

A view of Shop Street in Galway City in about 1955. The street is the principal thoroughfare through Galway. As the name suggests, it is the city’s main shopping street, and contains numerous old brick buildings, storefronts, and an array of bars. To the right in the photograph is Lynch’s Castle, the only complete secular medieval building left standing in Galway.

Taaffe’s Castle, Carlingford, County Louth

An image of Taaffe’s Castle in the coastal town of Carlingford in County Louth in about 1950. This fortified town house was purportedly built in the early sixteenth century by the Taffee's, an affluent merchant family.

A view of Chapelizod on the banks of the River Liffey in Dublin in about 1955. A manuscript annotation on the reverse reads 'Chapelizod'.
