James Joseph McCarthy (1817-1882)

References are made to his Royal Hibernian Academy exhibitions, to his appointment as Professor of Architecture at the Catholic University of Ireland, and to controversies over the restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and the commission to build St. Colman’s Cathedral in Queenstown (Cobh). The file includes a newspaper clipping referring to the history of the Capuchins on Church Street. The clipping includes a photographic print of the old Capuchin Chapel on the street which was built in 1796 and was replaced by St. Mary of the Angels in 1864.
