Small pouch annotated on spine ‘Letters to Father H.E.G. Rope / XI’ containing letters and cards to Fr. Henry Rope mainly from Fr. Joseph Keating SJ (editor of ‘The Month’), Fr. Stephen M. Browne SJ (Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin), Fr. Lambert McKenna SJ (Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin), Fr. P.J. Connolly SJ, editor, ‘Studies, An Irish Quarterly Review’, 34 Lower Lesson Street, Dublin, and other Jesuits involved in publishing. ‘The Month’ was a Catholic review magazine published by the English Province of the Society of Jesus. The letters mainly refer to literary matters and contributions by Father Rope to various periodicals. The file also includes several cards from Andrew Hilliard Atteridge (1852-1941), 3 Killowen Villas, Isleworth, Middlesex, William Frederick Paul Stockley, and Germaine Stockley (Woodside, Tivoli, Cork).

A bound volume of letters to Fr. Henry Rope from William Frederick Paul Stockley (Woodside, Tivoli, Cork). The volume is annotated on the spine ‘Letters to Father H.E.G. Rope / VIII’. The first item in the volume is a letter from Fr. Rope to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. referring to his long-standing friendship with the late Andrew Hilliard Atteridge (1852-1941). The letter is dated 25 April 1951 and contains information about Atteridge’s life. The Stockley letters are mostly personal correspondence with references to contemporary politics and various religious subjects.

‘The Capuchin Annual’ (1940-41) / Review and Correspondence Volume

A bound volume with a gilt title on the front cover which reads ‘Newspaper Cuttings’. The volume contains numerous original letters and newspaper clippings offering mainly favourable testimonials on editions of ‘The Capuchin Annual’ (1940-1941). The volume contains content from politicians, clergymen and religious, artists, and writers.

1916 Rising / Civil War / Bound Document Volume

A bound book, formerly ‘The Works of Ruskin / library edition / Vol. II’, in which clippings relating to the 1916 Rising taken from contemporary newspapers have been laid in. The clippings (including many printed photographs and illustrations) cover the fighting and the subsequent executions of the rebel leaders. The volume includes contemporary accounts mainly taken from loyalist publications, including the ‘Irish Times’, ‘Daily Sketch’ and ‘Weekly Dispatch’. The volume also includes articles from the ‘Cork Free Press’. The end pages of the volume contain clippings relating to the Civil War and material re the deaths and executions of leading republicans during the latter stages of that conflict. A few articles from the late 1930s and early 1940s (presumably compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap.) are also extant in the volume. Inserts include typescript ephemera mainly from anti-Treaty and republican sources during the Civil War. The volume is not paginated.

Archbishop Richard Cushing’s Pilgrimage to Ireland / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘cuttings’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings reflecting a wide range of literary and religious subjects. The volume includes several obituaries for prominent Irish emigrants (both religious and lay) in North America. The file also includes original photographs and ephemera relating to a pilgrimage to Ireland organised by Richard Cushing (1895-1970), Archbishop of Boston, in 1949. The photographs show Archbishop Cushing meeting various political and religious figures, including President Seán T. O’Kelly, Taoiseach John A. Costello, Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop John D’Alton, Paul A. Dever (Governor of Massachusetts), and the Capuchin friars, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. Typescript documents and ephemera are also extant in the volume, including material sourced from ‘The Advocate’ (Melbourne, Australia), and ‘The Father Mathew Record’.

The catalogue lists Irish history books and periodicals, as well as compilations and anthologies of Irish literature, prose and poetry, and religious texts. The file also contains information re a weekly draw in aid of the Capuchin Foreign Missions (21 Sept. 1968).
